CO!vJMUNICATIONS
11..0 letters were read. One from the State Road Department asking for a map
of the City. This was discussed and there are no maps availab;Le at this time.
The other letter was from Mayor Sed~i.Lck stating that in all fairness to the
Council, myself and the people of our City that action on the Ordinance allow-
ing the sale of Ale & Beer on Sunday should be held over until the first
Council meeting following my return.
Acting Mayor Washburn ask for remarks from each Councilman. Councilman Farrell
stated as far as he was concerned it did not make much difference when action
,"as taken, but the sale of beer and ale should be allmved on Sunday as he still
contends as before it was hurting the business people and it had been allowed
for seven years, and at present you can go south one quarter mile and one and
one half mile north and get beer on Sunday. He stated if it were in residential
districts he would be against it, but it was all business places on the highway
and they depend on tourist business. He also stated it was the Council's fault
that it "'as taken away from them and he felt they should give it back to them,
and if not they would eventually go to bootlegging it the same as in the old days.
Councilman John stated he believed the letter was alright and thought it should
be put on the table until the return of the Mayor.
Councilman Seng stated that you all know how I feel and all the placed in Edge-
water are good clean places and he did not know of any time where the Police had
to be called in and these people should not penalized and stated no one likes to
have anyone go into their place of business and state they cannot do this or that.
He also stated he to believed that eventually it would cause these people to
bootleg, but it was up to the older members on the COlIDcil to give their opinions.
Acting Hayor Washburn stated going back to the referendum vote which carried al-
most three to one, there was a petition formally presented to the Council by the
Civic Association and the Council was compelled to call this election and head
it the way the petition read and he did not think our own personal feelings comes
into this matter. Not only in our own City is it against the law to sell Beer
and Ale on Sunday, but in DeLand, New Smyrna Beach and Da~rtona Beach and it is
our business to accept the vote of the referendum and therefore was in favor of
tabling the Ordinance until Hayor lreturns, but do not think that this is not alive,
but a proposal to shelve it until the return of the Mayor and it would be acted
upon.
