BE IT RESOLVED BY 'I'fii!; TOVvlJ COUNCIL OF THE TOWN OF EDGEWATER
FLORIDA:
Section 1. That the I~ayor of the Town of Edgewater, Florida
is hereby authorized and directed to send a letter to the
Florida Power and Light Company, Daytona Beach, Florida,
reading as follows:
November 21, 1946
Florida Power & Light Company
Daytona Beach, Florida
Gentlemen:
I have been directed by the To~~ Council of the
Tovm of Edgewater, Florida, by resolution, to
write you the following letter.
The Town Council has received a nl~b8r of letters
from Edgewater citizens revealing the existence of
a critical condition in Edgewater as to electric
light and power service. They reveal an unhealthful
and unsanitary condition and one which affects the
comfort and business interests of the citizens also.
The people are dependent upon electric pumps for
water and the inadequate and irregular electric ser-
vice from New Smyrna Beach make the water supply
irregular with a resulting unsanitary situation.
The substance of the letters is that standard
appliances such as light 'bulbs, water pumps,
refrigerators, hot plates, heaters and fans do not
operate on the current being furnished and the light
fronl a 60 watt lmap is not bright enough to read a
newspaper, and that in the evening the current is
too weak to use a radio. They complain of burned
out motors and other electrical appliances due to
low voltage, the loss of food by spoilage due to
insufficient current to operate refrigeration units.
They complain of loss of business due to lack of
electricity and inadequacy of electricity being
furnished by New Smyrna Beach to them. They ask
that you serve them ~~th electricity and they ask
us to get you to.

It is not right that these Edgewater citizens should
have to put up with this unsatisfactory electric
service for the Florida Power and Light Company
holds a franchise from the TO'\Am of Edgewater which
has lliany years more to run and under which you are
now operating an electric light and power business
inside Edgewater and serving some of Edgewater
citizens with adequate and dependable electric
current at reasonable rates.
.
You have certain duties and responsibilities under
your franchise which you are not fulfilling. The
franchise requires you to construct, maintain and
operate electric light and power lines throughout
the municipality of Edgewater for the benefit and
convenience of the inhabitants of Edgewater and to
promptly extend your existing facilities as may be
required by one or more custmners or prospective
customers.
It is your duty and responsibility to supply
electricity not just to such of the citizens of
Edgewater as you choose to serve, but to supply all
of the citizens of Edgewater who request electric
service from your company. It is this full and
complete perfonnance of your duty under your fran-
chise that we dffiilillld on behalf of the To\~ of
Edgewater and its people who have requested electric
service from you. On their behalf, we demand that
you 2roceed imalediately to comply with your legal
duty, obligation and responsibility under your fran-
chise by extending your existing lines and facilities
throughout Edgewater to the extent necessary to
serve the people who wrote those letters and everyone
within the Edgewater corporate limits who has applied
or who does apply for your electric service.
The letters I mentioned are on file with the Town
Clerk and are available for your inspection.
,
Please let us have i~uediate action in this matter.
Very truly yours,
cJ:~
