COMMUNICATIONS
The Deputy Clerk read a letter from Fred W. DeMotte, Director of the Volusia
County Civil Defense, announcing a class in Radiological Monitoring, to be
held in Daytona Beach for representatives of all Fire Departments, Police
Departments, Public Works, other interested municipal and county officials,
and industrial firms. The classes will cover a six hour course of instruction
held in two hour sessions, each Wednesday night, starting January 25th, at
7:30 P.M.
Letter was read from the American Truss Co., Inc., calling attention to a fire
hazard existing in the vacant lot adjoining their plant to the east, where
numerous rubbish fires have been started and left unattended, making it
necessary to call the Fire DePartment twice when they got out of control.
They would like the problem eliminated.
A letter was read from the Board of Governors of the Edgewater Community Center,
that it had been unanimously agreed that the additional amount be granted to put
in the shuffleboard lanes; the amount of $500.00 had already been earmarked for
two lanes.
A copy of a letter was read from Attorney Chisholm to J. M. Wolfe, Chief
Engineer of the Florida East Coast Railway Company, informing him that the City
Council at their regular meeting of January 4th, 1961, would have an ordinance
read, prohibiting the speed of trains within the corporate limits of the City
of Edgewater, Florida, greater than twenty-five miles per hour.
OFFICERS REPORT
The Deputy Clerk read the Building Inspector's Report for the month of December,
1960.
RESOLUTIONS
NONE
ORDINANCES
Because of the negotiations going on with the Florida East Coast officials, Mayor
Shaeffer suggested that it might be well to table the ordinance prohibiting the
speed of trains within the corporate limits of the City of Edgewater, greater than
twenty-five miles per hour. Councilman Smith made a motion to this effect,
seconded by Councilman Sang, nobody objected.
OLD BUSINESS
Mayor Shaeffer reported that he had had an amicable meeting with Florida' East
Coast officials. Because of their re-organization January 1st, 1961, everything
has been held up, but they will install the culvert within sixty days, at a price
below an amount anyone had anticipated.
They will also look into warning signs on Indian River Boulevard at the railway
crossing.
Mayor Shaeffer also reported about a meeting he had with a representative of the
State Road Department. Owing to the turnover in the State Government, the pier
project has been delayed, but the Mayor was assured that the pier has priority,
it has been approved, and will be done.
NEW BUSINESS
Bids on Police Car. Bids were received from Watkins "Ford", Inc., Indian River
Motors, Ne\'l Snwrna Motors and Nieburger Chevrolet Company.

After discussion, motion was duly made by Councilman Seng that the Chevrolet
bid be accepted, seconded by Councilman Beck.
Councilman Smith stated that he was still of the opinion that the City does
not need two Police cars. Councilman Beck stated that it is not economical
for the City to use a broken down car that needs repairs; he stated that the
new car, used by the second policeman, could be left at City Hall, for the
use of the Mayor and the Building Inspector, when the policeman is not using
it.
The above motion was by vote CARRIED. Roll call vote being as follows:-
Councilman Beck Yea
Counci1man Seng Yea
Councilman Smith Nay
Councilman Armstrong Nay
Mayor Shaeffer Yea
Mayor Shaeffer stated that he would like Fire Chief Garlick, Police Chief
Norman or Patrolman Deibler, and each Councilman to attend the Civil Defense
Radiological l.[onitoring Class.
The ~or said he will investigate the fire hazard reported by the American
Truss Co:m.pany.
Mayor Shaeffer thanked Charles Sepkoski, Nels Frantzen, and Ruthe Driskel
who were present for the two shuffleboard lanes; requested that a letter of
appreciation be sent to the Board of Governors of the Community Center,
thanking them. for their generous offer.
Mayor Shaeffer suggested to the Council that they think of questions they
wish to bring before the New Snwrna Beach officials when they meet with them,
Monday evening, January 9th, regarding the electric problems.
Mayor Shaeffer spoke to Mr. Scofield about road washout at 30th Street, Florida
Shores.
COtUlcilman Smith suggested that surplus water department money should be in-
vested. Mr. Nat Brown mentioned that this could be done in the Building and
Loan at 4% interest, making sure that it would be an instant withdrawal invest-
ment. Mayor Shaeffer said it would be worthwhile to look into such an invest-
ment.
There being no further business Councilman Beck moved we do now adjourn,
seconded by Councilman Smith and by vote CARRIED.
