11-14-1990 o o CITY OF EDGEWATER PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD November 14, 1990 6:00 P.M. Community Center MINUTES ROLL CALL/CALL TO ORDER The Chairman, Harry Montgomery called the November 14, 1990 meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. in the Edgewater Community Center. Members present were: Harry Montgomery, Lawrence Lanchoney, Jeff Ridgdill and Kirk Jones. Board member Sharon Mooney was excused. Also present was Jack Carder, Director of Parks and Recreation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mr. Montgomery noted there was an error in the minutes of October 3, 1990. Under Fall Baseball Program, the words >>new athletic association<< should be eliminated and the words <<area coaches<< should be inserted. Mr. Lanchoney moved to approve the minutes with this correction noted and Mr. Ridgdill seconded the motion. Motion CARRIED 4-0. OLD BUSINESS Mr. Corder informed the Board of the success of this year's Haunted House. He noted 150 children were in the costume contest and approximately 1,000 to 1,200 people went through the Haunted House. NEW BUSINESS Senior Citizen Ad Hoc Committee Mr. Janes stated while campaigning for City Council, he received a lot of input from senior citizens about recreation. He suggested the Park Board set up a senior citizen ad hoc committee with one member of the Park Board as chairman to get the senior citizens' input about their priority needs far recreation. The Board reviewed the Parl~ Board by-laws concerning ad hoc committees and discussed in length the formation of such a committee. The Board unanimously chose Mr. Lanchoney to chair the committee and Mr. Corder stated Mrs. Wadsworth, City Clerk, could advertise for applications to serve on this committee. The Park Board will then review the applications received and choose perhaps three people who will meet with Mr. Lanchoney. Mr. Lanchoney can then bring his report back to the Park Board for review and consideration. Mr. Jones moved the Park Board set up a senior citizen ad hoc advisory committee with Mr. Lanchoney as chairperson, to receive input from senior citizens on recreation geared strictly to seniors. Mr. Ridgdill seconded the motion and it CARRIED 4-0. Park Update Mr. Corder stated the boat ramp repairs at Kennedv Park are almost completed and the dock extension at Veterans Park is finished. He said he is very pleased with the job that was done on the dock and it is getting a tremendous amount of use. He noted the two shuffleboard courts at Whistle Stop Park will be finished within a week and some interested people in Meadow Lakes Subdivision have already approached him about forming a shuffleboard club to play there. He stated Rotary Park is also getting a lot of use even though it is not fully completed. o 0 Parks and Recreation Monthly Report Mr. Corder stated the girls softball and soccer programs were in progress now and going well. He noted he would be attending the County Council meeting the following day to hear the final decision on the Port Authority's recommendation to fund grant money for the river walk on Riverside Drive. He also stated the County is in the process of purchasing land now for the bike path on Park Avenue. MISCELLANEOUS Mr. Lanchoney suggested that once every 6 months the Park Board should review the Recreation Comprehensive Plan to determine where progress Mr. Corder agreed this could be done. or once a year Element of the was being made. Mr. Montgomery asked the Board's views on perhaps changing the Park Board meetings to bi-monthly as the Recreation Department has been running smoothly and maybe meeting every month is not as necessary now as it had been a few years ago. After discussion on this, the Board agreed it is better to have the option of meeting every month like they do presently. AD30URNMENT There being no further business, Mr. Ridgdill moved to adjourn, seconded by Mr. Jones. The meeting ended at 6:40 P.M.
