05-02-1990 o (.) CITY OF EDGEWATER PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD MAY 2, 1990 7:00 PM CITY HALL MINUTES ROLL CALL/CllT.T. TO ORDER Vice Chail:man, Kirk Jones, called the May 2, 1990, meeting of the Parks and Recreation Board to order at 7:10 PM. in the Edgewater City Hall Conference Room. Members present were: Kirk Jones, Jeff Ridgdill and Lawrence Lanchoney. Board members Harry Montgomery and Sharon Mooney were excused. Also present were Jack Corder/Director of Parks and Recreation and Robin Colucci from the press. Councilman Danny Hatfield arrived later. ~PROVAL OF MINUTES Mr. Lanchoney moved to approve the minutes of the March 7, 1990 meeting and Mr. Ridgdill seconded the motion. Motion CARRIED 3- o. OLD BUSINES~ UDdate on Bi2 Wheels Bike Path Committee Mr. Corder updated the members on the progress of the Big Wheels Bike Path Committee, stating they were ordering t-shirts to sell and putting donation canisters in local businesses and sending out letters to sponsors. He noted that the Committee now had 15- 20 volunteers and any of the Board members who were interested in helping the Committee should oontact Nora Gillespie or Donna Wagner. Discussion continued on the bike path plans for Roberts Road, Indian River Boulevard, Park Avenue and Riverside Drive. Mr. Jones expressed the need for community involvement to make these bike paths a reality. NEW BUSINESS Pro~ams/Activities For Girls Mr. Jones stated that most of Edgewater's programs are geared toward boys and we need to start looking into activities and programs for girls, particularly the age group 7 -12. Mr. Corder agreed this needs to be done and presently we just don't have the facilities to accommodate any new programs. He said next year he hopes to start a girls' softball league and possibly a 5-6 year old girls' T-Ball league. Programs such as cheerleading, baton and gymnastics were suggested and Mr. Corder noted these programs could begin when the new gymnasium/activities center is completed. Also, the gymnasium will allow for adult and senior citizen programs as well. plans For 26 Acres Mr. Corder stated the School Board has the paperwork for the 26 acres and may be finalized this month and then the engineering, stonnwater calculations, retention and permitting stages can begin. He noted the ballfields and gymnasium/activities center will be the first priority at the 26 acre complex and later plans include tennis and racquetball courts, pavilions, shuffleboard and basketball. All of these plans for the 26 acres are following with the Comprehensive Plan and will be a reality wi thin the five year time span. o o Councilman Hatfield stated he had spoken with New Smyrna Beach Commissioner Doug Davich. Mr. Davich has been considering the possibility of New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater joining together to renovate the old Junior High School into a "Southeast Volusia Recreation Center". The Board discussed this matter and determined that if Mr. Davich wanted to approach the Board they would certainly listen, but felt that our 26 acre complex should be first priority and it was time that Edgewater had facilities of their own. ImPact Fee Monthlv Report Mr. Corder stated Whistle Stop Park was coming along nicely and is still under the estimated budget amount for completion. Parks & Recreation Monthlv Report Mr. Corder stated he was planning to have some baseball tournaments coming up at the end of baseball season and also noted all of the progress which has been done to Whistle Stop Park in the past two months. MISCF.T .T.JlNFnUS Mr. Ridgdill asked the status of the proposed May Festival and Mr. Corder said that due to the extensive work at Whistle Stop, we do not have enough time to put together a festival in four weeks time and instead we are planning a j oint venture with the Fire Department for the ~th of July festivities. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, Mr. Lanchoney moved to adj ourn, seconded by Mr. Ridgdill. The meeting ended at 8: 15 PM.
