OLD BUSINESS
Report on street dedication
The Chairman reported that the dedication of the streets to the north of
Park Avenue is now in the hands of the City Attorney for his handling.
NEW BUSINESS
Industrial Appreciation Week
The Chairman read the February 8th letter from Lieut. Governor Wayne Mixson
which advised that Industry Appreciation Week has been set for September
16 - 20. She suggested that the Board should begin to plan for this event
now and asked for member input. Members recommended submitting a proposal
to the City Council similar to that which they had suggested for last year,
limiting the money request to $300. Mrs. Massey briefed Mr. Siconolfi, a
new member, on the plans which had been proposed for last year. Mr. Schneider
recommended that the industrial fair begin at 10 a.m.
Mrs. Massey talked about the visits being made by the Economic Development
Committee of the New Smyrna Beach/Edgewater Chamber. The visits are made
monthly on the :third Wednesday; the members visit a different Dusiness
each month. She invited the members to attend, and suggested that a similar
arrangement could be made for Industry Appreciation Week. Mr. Schneider
talked about the possibility of coordinating visits with New Smyrna Beach.
He agreed to look into this and report back at the next meeting.
The group talked about the idea of a reception after the fair, and visiting
local industrial sites as a group. It was pointed out that the members can
tour the local businesses as a group as long as a memorandum is filed about
the visit. Mrs. Massey urged the members to attend the tour scheduled for
May 15; the group meets at her office at 8 a.m. Mrs. Middleton reported on
the last visit made by the Economic Development Committee.
Mrs. Massey asked the members to come to the next meeting with suggestions
for the Industrial Appreciation Week. She agreed to talk to Mr. J. Roland
Smith, Chairman of the Industrial Board in New Smyrna Beach, to make sure
that;Edgewater's plans do not conflict with theirs.
The members considered who to nominate for the Florida Industry Appreciation
Award. The forms must be in the hands of the Department of Commerce by
May 31. Several of the businesses mentioned for consideration were Noland
Car Company, Coronado Paint and Edgewater Machine Fabricators. All of these
businesses do an export business. Mrs. Massey suggested Coronado Paint
because of the volume of business and number of employees. Noland Car
was recommended because of its recent expansion. Mr. Faidley pointed out
that Noland Car may be more in line with light industry than the paint
company. Mrs. Massey referred to Mr. Mixson's letter which advised that
judging criteria will be based on special contributions nominees have
made through job creation, increased capital investment, civic activities,

and involvement in the life of the community. The members felt that Noland
Car would meet this criteria. Mr. Gnau moved to nominate Noland Car as
the Board's choice. The motion was seconded by Mr. Faidley and CARRIED
6-0.
Mr. Gnau suggested that a news release reporting that the Board had nominated
Noland Car would be in line. It was pointed out that a.newsreporter was
present. Those.members who are available agreed to call on the Noland Car
Company the next day.to see if they are agreeable to the nomination.
Mrs. Massey suggested that another company be nominated as well; if both
companies were agreeable and provide the information for the nomination
forms, both names would be submitted. The members agreed that Coronado
Paint Company, who has recently undergone an expansion, would be the logical
choice. Mr. Gnau amended his motion to include both Noland Car and Coronado
Paint Company. Mr. Faidley seconded the amended motion and it CARRIED 6-0.
Mr. Siconolfi, Mr. Faidley and Mr. Gnau agreed to call on the nominees.
The members agreed to come to the next meeting with ideas for the appreciation
week, i.e., tours, booths, food for the reception, costs, invitations,
certificates of appreciation, etc.
