01-05-1984 Q Q CITY OF EDGEWATER INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT BOARD January 5, 1983 Minutes Chairman Massey called the regular meeting to order at 7:05 p.m. in the conference area of the Community Center. ROLL CALL Present: Mrs. Massey, Mrs. Middleton, Messrs. Poland, Faidley, Vazquez and Schneider*. Excused: Messrs. Foleno and Gnau. Absent: Mr. Sawyer. Also present: Mrs. Taylor, Secretary. *Mr. Schneider arrived to the meeting at 7:20 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mrs. Massey noted that the minutes of November 3, 1983 Joint Meeting with City Council failed to show that Mrs. Cornelia Kinsey, City Clerk, was also in attendance. She asked that this correction be made. Mr. Vazquez motioned to approve the minutes of the November 3, 1983 meeting, with that correction. Mr. Poland seconded the motion, which CARRIED 5-0. There was no December meeting of the Board. OLD BUSINESS Update report on the streets across the F.E.C. tracks to industrial land north of Park Avenue. Mrs. Massey recalled that at the November 3 joint meeting it was agreed to ask the City Attorney to look into this situation to see what could be done. Mrs. Massey reported that she had contacted the City Clerk today and they were working on it. She read from the minutes of the November 23 City Council meeting at which this matter was discussed and said that as far as she knew the streets are not dedicated streets, but she had suggested that if they are not dedicated streets, they need to find out how to make them dedicated streets. She noted that the comments made by Mr. Armstrong at the Council meeting referred to streets on the other side of Park Avenue. The members briefly discussed the Bill Porter rezoning request. This property lies adjacent to industrial land on Park Avenue near Carol Ann Drive. Mr. Porter's property was approved for MH-2 zoning (from MH-l). Mrs. Massey read the item in the November 23 council meeting minutes concerning the vacancy on the Industrial Board and pointed out that the Board can have ten members, but it is not a requirement that there be ten members and she did not believe the Board needed ten members at this time. Referring to the minutes of the Council meeting concerning the F.E.C. crossings, Mr. Vazquez pointed out that the goal of the Board is to open up that industrial land for development. Getting approval to take fire equipment onto the property is not solving the problem. Mr. Vazquez asked if there was any feedback on the tree ordinance which was discussed at the joint meeting with Council. Mr. Schneider reported that he had attended the workshop meeting held by the Planning Commission for the purpose of discussing the tree ordinance. He was advised that the tree ordinance is primarily designed along the lines of the County ordinance. The Planning Commission members said they plan to do more work on the ordinance. ~ - o o NEW BUSINESS Chairman Massey advised that there will be a Department of Commerce meeting on January 12 and 13; there will be eight representatives present who will tour the area to look at the industrial sites. Mr. Vazquez further reported that on the first day short presentations will be given to the visitors; the second day a tour will be given. The pur- pose is to show them what the area has now, and what it has to offer newcomers. He felt the board members would be interested in the program. Mrs. Massey will keep the members informed about the meeting. On another matter, Mr. Schneider informed the board members that he has learned that another city is trying to attract from Edgewater one of our larger industries, with tax incentives and reduced utility/rates. A move at this time would not be to their best interest, but Mr. Schneider sug- gested that the City should look into ways to make it more attractive for existing industry to stay here. Mrs. Massey invited the members to the January 12th meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Bud Denton with Volusia County will be the guest speaker. The discussion returned to the need to do something for the existing local industry to let them know that they are appreciated. Mr. Schneider suggested an Industry Appreciation Day or something along that line. Mr. Vazquez mentioned that the Board members could meet with the industrial people and tour their facilities to acquaint themselves with the operation, find out what their goals are and if the Board can be of assistance to them. This idea was further deve~oped by the members with the result that a First Annual Industrial Appreciation ~10nth was planned. It was suggested that as the businesses are called on by the board members they could be presented with questions concerning their operation; the infor- mation obtained could be compiled and distributed to the other industries so that they are aware of the services available within the city. This would encourage growth by trading with each other. There was discussion about which businesses to call on. Also suggested was to have a get-together for the industrial people at the Community Center so that they could meet each other and City officials. It was agreed to ask Council for a Proclamation to proclaim April as Industry Appreciation Month. A Certificate of Appreciation could be presented to the head of each industrial business. Cost of printing of certificates and catering of the food was briefly discussed. It was unanimously decided to hold a workshop on Monday, January 16, at 6:30 p.m. to plan further for the Industrial Appreciation Month. Mrs. Massey suggested inviting the State Chamber of Commerce people from winter Park to the cocktail party. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. Minutes submitted by Joan Taylor Industrial Development Board January 5, 1983 I I - 2 - I B u Date O/h-7 5' ' ? 'i / -z-.. Yn 5 --tJ ~I' Q 1 , .
