ROLL CALL Members present: Mrs. Middleton, Messrs. Sawyer, Gnau, Vazquez and Foleno. Members excused: Mrs. Massey and Mr. Faidley. Members absent: Mrs. Lee, Mr. Poland and Mr. Schneider. Also present: Mrs. Taylor, Secretary. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mr. Gnau moved to approve the minutes of the August 4, 1983 meeting. The motion was seconded by Mr. Vazquez and CARRIED 5-0. OLD BUSINESS Mr. Sawyer welcomed Mr. Al Blankenship, a member of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives). He explained that Mr. Blankenship was at the meeting at the invitation of Mr. John Vazquez, and he turned the meeting over to Mr. Vazquez. Mr. Vazquez introduced Mr. Blankenship, and advised the members that Mr. Blankenship had kindly agreed to speak to the members on very short notice. Mr. Blankenship informed the group that SCORE volunteers are all retired from businesses and work in an advisory capacity to help small business people. There are six members from the New Smyrna Beach/Edgewater area and about 50 members in the Daytona Beach area. Although the request to assist an industrial board is an unusual one, he agreed to bring it up at the Executive meeting to be held September 12, and stated that with their approval, he could then go to the General Membership Committee to see if there are volunteers in the area to help. Mr. Blankenship said there is a list of the members which identifies their expertise, and he felt sure there were members who could be of assistance to Edgewater. He said that someone from their group could speak to the Board at their next meeting. The members thanked him for coming to the meeting. Mr. Sawyer read a memo to the members which advised that there is a meeting on September 7, 1983 to investigate the advantages of forming a Certified Development Company in this area. The secretary agreed to advise any of those members interested in attending of the location and time of the meeting. Mr. Vazquez explained the benefits of a Certified Development Company. Mr. Vazquez reported on the beautification program, stating that he had made a report to the Chamber Board of Directors about a month previous; it was received favorably. They instructed the Beautification Committee to come back to the Board with costs, what it will take to get it started, and on the whole approved of the idea. The members discussed goals for the Industrial Board, with a five-year plan in mind. Mr. Gnau felt the City should use the land they have to best advantage, while working toward an industrial park, and stated the need to acquire additional land for industry. Mr. Foleno said that he had attended three industrial board meetin~in a small town up north this summer; they had a real estate person who dealt with industrial only.' He did all the "leg work" for the town. The Board there wanted to form an industrial park, and the realtor did the contact work. His recommendation was that the City of Edgewater get a good industrial realtor to make the contacts to obtain the land. He stated that in some casffithe land had to be rezoned to industrial. Mr. Vazquez suggested making an inventory of the industrially zoned land in Edgewater. It was mentioned that Michael Bobroff with the Florida Department of Commerce had a computer print out of industrial land and buildings available in the area. The secretary offered to get in touch .. ,"'"'0-1_ Q Q with Mr. Bobroff to obtain an updated copy for the members. Mr. Foleno mentioned that he owned five acres on U. S. 1 just outside of Edgewater which he had considered rezoning to industrial; it is presently zoned B-5. Mr. Sawyer said the Board should be checking the area around Edgewater for future growth. The members felt that Mr. Vazquez's suggestion to inventory existing industrial land and facilities, with what utilities are available, etc. was a good one. They agreed to begin work on this at the next meeting. They noted that there was no one for a prospect to talk to on a confi- dential basis if they were interested in moving to the area. Mrs. Middleton urged that the members proceed quickly to get information about rezoning some of the County land abutting Edgewater before it is put to other uses than industrial. The secretary was asked to bring a copy of "All About Edgewater" to the next meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Minutes submitted by Joan Taylor Industrial Development Board September 1, 1983 - 2 -
