EXPLANATORY DATA
AUGUST 16,1982
5. Communications
A. Sundance Lounge
The owner of the Sundance Lounge has requested that he be
permitted to keep certain lights on. See attached letter.
I have invited him to come to the meeting to state his ~ase.
B. T. K. Wetherell - Median Strips
See attached. As you know, the manner by which D.O.T. main-
tains median strips leaves alot to be desired and this is
generally true allover the state. Any improvement in that
situation will be welcomed by the Public Works Depa~tment.
C. Parks and Recreation Board
At its meeting of August 11 the Parks and Recreation Board
recommended to the City Council that the name of the new
ballfield complex at the elementary school be: Jimmy D.
Hogan Park.
The Board also recommended that the Buildings and Grounds
Department be renamed the Parks and Recreation Department
and that it consist of two sections: the Buildings and Grounds
unit and the Parks and Recreation unit.
They also recommended a change in the present operation of
the shuffleboard courts.
As to the first, the naming of the park, this is an appropriate
councilmanic function and could be done at this meeting.
As to the second, the organization and naming of departments
is usually left up to the manager. The question of establish-
ing a city-sponsored recreation program is touched upon in
the budget and could be discussed at the budget workshops.
As to the shuffleboard operation, this will be a highly
controversial issue and I recommend that council proceed
with extreme care in this area.
7. Unfinished Business
C. Approval of Traffic Signal Maintenance Agreement - U.S.#l and
Park Avenue
This is a .routine type of agreement which I have no problems
with and recommend for your adoption.
8. New Business
A. Repair of Ditch Witch
This is an example of one of several high cost unanticipated
items in the current year budget. Since we have been criti-
cized by certain regular attendees at these meetings regarding
these expenditures, which we cannot foresee, we felt it
desirable to bring this to your attention. The ditch witch is
a diesel powered unit which needs a complete engine overhaul.
Because of the fact that it is a specialty product, the repair
costs exceed those normally expected, such as with tractors.
Your advance approval of this repair is requested. Replacement
cost of the unit would be 5 or 6 times that figure.
