MINUTES
ROLL CALL /CALL TO ORDER
The Chairman, Tom Tipton called the meeting to order at 7:02 PM in the
Edgewater City Hall. Members present were: Tom Tipton, Hal Jones, Shirley
Pittman, and Maurice Remillard. Also present was Jack Corder, Director of
Parks and Recreation.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Mrs. Pittman moved to approve the minutes of the July 10, 1997 meeting and
Mr. Jones seconded the motion. Motion CARRIED 4 -0.
OLD BUSINESS
Mrs. Pittman stated she wanted to express what a good job was done on the
fountain at Indian River Boulevard and everyone agreed. Mr. Corder stated it
did turn out nicely and already was vandalized the past weekend with soap
added to it, which he added took 6 labor hours to drain, clean and refill it.
Mr. Corder stated, he would like to have a parks and facilities tour for the Board,
so they can see first hand the recreational facilities and just what his department
is responsible for. The Board agreed that this tour would be on October 4th at 9
AM and everyone would meet at Whistle Stop Park.
NEW BUSINESS
Introduction of Mr. Maurice Remillard
At this time Mr. Maurice Remillard was introduced and welcomed as the new
member to the Park Board.
Status of Rotary Club Festival
Mr. Tipton stated there had been plans tentatively made for a joint effort with the
Rotary Club for a festival to be held at Rotary Park in October, and asked what
the update was on that . Mr. Corder stated the event had been postponed till
springtime, by the Rotary Club. The plans included a horseshoe tournament,
arts and crafts show and possible showing of local race cars. Mr. Corder stated
it was still being planned for, just not at this time.
Christmas Parade Plans
Mr. Tipton asked for details on this year's Christmas Parade and Mr. Corder
stated they were pretty much the same as other years. He said the starting point
and staging area would once again be at the old land fill site on Air Park Road,
and the parade proceeds from there, east down Indian River Boulevard to the
Winn Dixie Shopping Center. He stated the invitations have already been mailed
out and we are getting responses already.
Park Update
Mr. Corder stated the upcoming tour on October 4th will give the best update of
the park and recreation facilities, but in brief he stated that this year's soccer
tryouts were held and there are 24 teams this year, up two from last year. He
also said next week was the beginning of the Co -ed Softball league, with 6
teams and we are also doing a joint effort with Volusia Country for a girls softball
league with 7 teams. He stated we have lost the church gymnasium for this
year's basketball league and we would be making an effort to try and make it
work at the Indian River Elementary outside courts. He stated we helped put the
roof over the courts, but the court is still concrete and on inclement days it could
be difficult playing in the cold and wind. He said we would be sending flyers to
the school and get the parents input on what they feel could work.
MISCELLANEOUS
Mrs. Pittman asked what the status was on the Mango Lake property, and asked
if anyone was able to determine about the bald eagle that was nesting in the
area. Mr. Jones and Mr. Corder stated they had both seen the eagle at the lake
in the past few months , but no one has yet to be able to determine where the
eagle's nest was located. Mr. Jones suggested contacting the Audobon
Society.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, Mr. Jones moved to adjourn, seconded by Mrs.
Pittman. The meeting ended at 8:20 PM.
