09-18-2002i CITY OF EDGEWATER VETERANS PARK ADVISORY COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 18, 2002, 10:00 AM LEISURE SERVICES OFFICE —1108 S. RIDGEWOOD MINUTES ROLL CALL /CALL TO ORDER Mr. Jack Corder called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM. Members present were: Walter Heck, Connie Whitlock, James Brown, and Jack Corder. Also present was Bill Cole, Chris Fisher, and James Humphries. NEW BUSINESS Upcoming Veterans Day Services Mr. Corder stated the purpose of this meeting was to determine the location and duties of each service organization for the upcoming Veterans Day Services and Memorial Day Services. Mr. Humphries, from Sea Pines Memorial Gardens, spoke and stated in previous years, he has had services at Sea Pines, trying to accommodate times when New Smyrna and Edgewater were not having services. He said he would like to see the organizations get together and have one organization do the Veterans Services and one do the Memorial Services. He felt this would help to ease the workload of those involved and also it would increase the attendance at each service. The City's Veterans Park had been used in previous years, and the parking problem there forced a move to the Edgewater Cemetery. He offered Sea Pines as one of the locations and Edgewater Cemetery as the other, suggesting the Memorial Day Services could be sponsored by the VFW and held at the Edgewater Cemetery and the Veterans Services could be sponsored by the American Legion and held at Sea Pines. After much discussion of this suggestion, Mr. Fisher made a motion to hold Memorial Day Services at Edgewater Cemetery by the VFW, and Veterans Day Services to be held at Sea Pines by the American Legion. Mr. Heck seconded the motion and it carried unanimously. It was also discussed as to who would provide tents, P.A. systems, chairs, etc. It was decided that the Service Organizations would run the programs and the Leisure Service Dept. would be responsible for providing tents, chairs or P.A. system, if needed. The Committee also discussed the problem they had last year at Edgewater Cemetery. Many of the widows of veterans were unhappy because the services were held too close to the monument, and some of the graves were walked on. It was determined to move the services back farther to prevent this, which can be done for the next couple of years, until more graves are added, and then another option may have to be considered at that time. Mr. Corder stated he would like to someday replace the name plate board at Veterans Park with something more low maintenance. An inscripted monument was discussed and Mr. Corder agreed to look into it in the future. OLD BUSINESS —None. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, Mr. Fisher moved to adjourn, seconded by Mr. Heck. Minutes submitted by Barb Kowall
