Interview#1
Advanced Air&Heat—Park Avenue Edgewater
Q. Did you know that the City of Edgewater has an Economic Development Board?
A. No, what do they do?
Q. Did you know that the City of Edgewater has a Web page, and have you used it in your business?
A. I knew they had a web page, but it would be better if they had more applications on-line. In St
John's County you can actually order a permit, pay for it and get the approval on-line. If Edgewater
was more automated I believe more contractors would be pulling permits. It takes too much time to
come to the City and go through the whole process.
Q. What percentage of your labor force lives in Edgewater?
A. I keep 28 or 29 employees and 95%of those live in Edgewater. When you have a small business like
ours you are supporting not only the employees but their husbands, wives and children. The money
they make working for our company gets spent in the City of Edgewater.
Q. Are there sufficient qualified people in this area to fit your business needs?
A. We have trained most of our employees because we have a specialty business. However, it seems
that most people in this area do not have basic customer and job skills. To have training in the basics
would be very helpful.
Q. If you could ask the City of Edgewater for one change that would affect your business what would
that be?
A.The City of Edgewater is made up of a lot of small businesses and it is felt that city employees seem
happy if they can shut your business down or issue a violation regarding your business. It would be
helpful if city employees had a better understanding of what it takes to run a small business and
support several employees. When we are successful and our employees are getting paid it is good for
the city. I have seen some violations at larger businesses go unnoticed while the little guy gets a red
flag. This may be perception, but I still think that if the employees that service in the capacity of City
of Edgewater employees had a better understanding of what it takes to run a business, it would be
beneficial to their quality of customer service.
Interview#2
Myron's Auto Service &Towing—Ridgewood Ave.
Q. Did you know that the City of Edgewater has an Economic Development Board?
A. Yes.
Q. Do you know of anything that the Economic Development Board has ever accomplished?
A. No.
Q. Did you know that the City of Edgewater has a Web page, and have you used it in your business?
A. I knew they had a web page, but I have never used it for my particular business.
Q. What percentage of your labor force lives in Edgewater?
A. I have 13 employees and 60%of them live in Edgewater.
Q. Are there sufficient qualified people in this area to fit your business needs?
A.Yes, I believe there are.
Q. If you could ask the City of Edgewater for one change that would affect your business what would
that be?
A. I have no complaints. The City of Edgewater doesn't bother me with anything and I usually get
recommendations from them for my business. We are a very service oriented business.
Q.What do you think the City of Edgewater should do to help the area?
A. I know they are trying to attract more business, but in these economic times I believe it will be a
hard thing to accomplish.
Interview#3
Discovery Days Institute—Ridgewood Ave.
I contacted Discovery Days on two separate occasions to ask for an interview, but was not able to
make an appointment or have anyone call me back.
