The minutes of the regular meeting of June 4, 1940 were read bpy the Clerk, whereupon Councilman Bartlett moved that they be approved as read., seconded by Councilman Goodyear and by vote declared CARRIED. BILLS AND ACCOUNCTS . The following bills were read. I .Walter Hawkins , Clerk of Circuit Court, Recording Tax Sale $ 1.85 Salaries. .R.Renwick, 2.00 C .D .Bartlett, 2.00 W.T.Goodyear, 2.00 Walter C.Fuller, Clerk, First half of June 25.00 Horace -King, Marshall, First half of June 20.00 Horace King, Marshall, Extra Compensation for month of June 10.00 Robert Houston, Labor cutting Brush on Spencer Street. 2.00 H.L.Haughton, Treas. Citzens Committee July 4th Celebration Donation authorized latter in this meeting $100.00 Councilman Goodyear moved that the bills be approved, paid and be made a part of these minutes , seconded by Councilman Bartlett and by vote declared CARRIED. REPORTS OF OFFICERS . Mayor Renwick reporting on the crossing at Park Ave. and the F.E .C . R.R. advised that the Town was responible for the road from the ends of the railroad ties. It was agreed by Council that the Marshall should have the high spots of the road leveled off and then Council would decide if any further treat- ment was necessary. Clerk Fuller read a quotation from Peaslee-Gaulbert Co. on Flake Calcium Chloride for use on roads . Councilman Bartlett moved that the Clerk order Two Drums (300 lbs. ) of Flake Calcium Chloride at a_price_not to exceed $2.21 per cwt. , this amount to be used for experimental purposes , seconded by Councilman Goodyear and by vote declared CARRIED. The Clerk reported that Mr. A.B .Sechrest, 238 West 11th Street , Jacksonville Fla. had removed 8 of the 9 posts which he bought from the Barnhart Family but that the 9th Electric Light Standard was retained by H.P .< ilkinson in front of his property. The Clerk as Tax Collector read a report dated June 10 , 1940 on the Collection of Taxes for the year 1939. Councilman Bartlett moved that the report be approved and be made a part of these minutes, seconded by Councilman Goodyear and by vote declared CARRIED. :. inutes of June 18 , 1940. Page 2. The Marshall reported on the condition of Park Ave. Road edges at the locations of culverts. He recommended that railroad ties be placed along edges to form a retainer wall for the road fill. He was requested to see if enough ties could be procured to do this work. COMMUNICATIONS . The Clerk read a letter from .J.Bigelow, dated June 14, 1940 inreference to Lot 30, Block B , Sec. 2, Highland Shores sub. being used as a street. The Attorney was requested to answer this letter and bring the matter up at a Board of Equalization Meeting. Mr. Robert Fee presented a plat of Lot 6. , Sheppard and Sanchez Grant. Councilman Goodyear moved that Council approve and accept Plat of Lot 6-, Sheppard. and Sanchez Grant submitted by Mr. P .B .Dick, that the Mayor be authorized to sign this plat and that the Town Clerk sign and attach the Town Seal, seconded by Cpuncilman Bartlett and by vote declared CARRIED. Yrs. Elizabeth Fee asked from Council for a contribution to the Red Cross. After a discussion it was the opinion of Council that indivual property owners should decide whether they wanted to make a contribution instead of Council making a contribution for all the property owners. UNFINISHED BUSINESS . The Clerk opened and presented to Council Bids for shell from C.A.Holland S.L.DeLoach and Cecil Lofton. There also was presented a letter from the Limerock Association of Florida,Inc. giving prices of limerock for roads . Council agreed to defer any action until they could view the street and decide what work :hould be done. A tentative date of June 27th was set for this survey. NEW BUSINESS. Mr. R.C.Huetti.ch and Horace King offered to supply and set a Flag Pole if Council would supply the Flag. Their offer was accepted with thanks. Councilman Bartlett 2017-e . the Town purchase a 6 X1Ot Flag at a cost not to ,mss exceed 10.0O , the Clerk,°order the flag , seconded by Councilman Goodyear, and by vote declared CARRIED. The Clerk recommended to Council that the Application of Edith E.Patch for Homestead Exemption for the year 1940 be Granted, as he was convinced that the reason,for the non-receipt of this application during the period of 6dE § Jan.l to April 1 , as given on the application was correct. Councilman Goodyear moved that the Application for Homestead Exemption made by Edith E .Patch be granted and that Council so approve by their sign- atures on the application, seconded by Councilman Bartlett and by vote declared CARRIED. Mrr. Geo. Gunthrop spoke in reference to the Fourth of July Celebration and requested a donation towards the expenses. He explained that the Citzens would contribute both in cash and materialsand also the Merchants of New Smyrna Beac# would contribute prizes and materials. He said that the Town benefited by publicity given this event. Mr. Robert Fee spoke in favor of having a speaker to make an address on the history of the Fourth of July and what it meant especially at this time. Councilman Goodyear moved that $100.00 be donated to the Citzens Committee with the provision that next year the Committee appear before Council for a conference about any possible celebration before any public anouncement is made, seconded by Councilman Bartlett and by vote declared CARRIED. It was ordered that this donation be charged to the Delinquent Tax Fund.(Sp. D.T.F.) Minutes of June 18 , 1940. Page 3 NEW BUSINESS , continued. The Clerk reported that adjacent property owners, as far as he and the Marshall were able to make measn.remants, had their fences over on the Town owned lot described as the Y.187.4' of the E. 141' of Lot39 F, Ass' rs Sub. of G.Alarvez Grant. The Clerk recommended that an engineer be employed tp set up corner markers. He advised that Engineer Ferris would do the work for $10.00. He was Instructed to see the adjacent property owners to ascertain if they would contribute towrds the cost of a survey as it was the opinion of Council that a survey would benefit them as much as the Town.
