CITY OF EDGEWATER
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
July 11, 1989 7:00 P.M.
City Hall
MINUTES
ROLL CALL/CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Mark Seifert called the meeting to order at 7:06 P.M. in the Edgewater City
Hall. Members present were: Mark Seifert, Richard Loomis, Diane Gross, Jodi Geiger
and Gloria Fish. Committee member JoAnne Sikes was excused and John Borner was absent.
Also present was Councilman Danny Hatfield.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Mrs. Gross moved to approve the minutes of the June 15, 1989 meeting and Mrs. Fish
seconded the motion. Motion CARRIED 5-0.
OLD BUSINESS
Goals and Objectives
Mr. Seifert reviewed some of the goals discussed at last month's meeting and added
he had already received a good response from some local businesses willing to help.
He felt we would continue to get a good backing from the business community as added
beautification to the city will be an asset to them as well. Councilman Hatfield
mentioned that donations for the Beautification Committee can be accepted through the
City and will be put in a line item account for beautification. Mrs. Fish asked if
the Committee would receive any money in this year's budget and Councilman Hatfield
replied that the budget was being worked on right now and there would be some funds,
but he didn't know how much. He didn't feel it would be a large amount and stated
that most of the Committee's funds would come from private funding and accounting
would have to be made of how the public's money will be spent.
Mr. Seifert felt the Committee should work toward a plan to put in motion this Fall.
Mr. Loomis suggested the possibility of businesses donating trash cans for use along
U.S. 1. The trash cans could have a "Keep Our City Clean" slogan and mention which
business had donated it. Mrs. Geiger mentioned that the Future Farmers of America
at the New Smyrna High School may be a good group to contact as the kids would be older,
and mature enough to start a project and carry it through. She also stated that tree
sales are a very good way to make money and maybe that could be done later to help
support some of the Committee projects. Suggestions were also made about beautifying
the three "Welcome to Edgewater" signs. Councilman Hatfield suggested the City grounds
and buildings might be a good place to start as it would have good visibility and
would be setting a good example.
NEW BUSINESS
By-Laws
The Committee had a lengthy discussion reviewing by-laws from other cities and came up
with a sample draft which the secretary agreed to put in order and have ready for final
approval by the Committee at the August meeting.
MISCELLANEOUS
Mrs. Geiger asked about the "Home of the Month Award" discussed at the previous meeting.
She felt it should be geared toward people who have really done their own landscaping
and worked month after month to maintain it, and not just given to new homes in which
the builder is responsible for the work. It was also brought up that beautification
is not just landscaping, but includes clean up, painting, and improvements to residences.
The Committee agreed to begin checking on what kind of an award would be appropriate.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, Mrs. Geiger moved to adjourn, seconded by Mrs. Fish.
The meeting adjourned at 8:10 P.M.
