CITY OF EDGEWATER
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE

MINUTES
ROLL CALL/CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Mark Seifert called the September 12, 1989, meeting of the Beautification
Committee to order at 7:13 P.M. in the Edgewater City Hall Conference Room.
Members present were: Mark Seifert, JoAnne Sikes, Gloria Fish and Jodi Geiger.
Committee member Diane Gross was excused and John Borner and Richard Loomis were absent.
Also present was Jennifer Halperin from the press.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Mrs. Geiger moved to approve the minutes of the August 8, 1989, meeting and Mrs. Fish
seconded the motion. Motion CARRIED 4-0.
OLD BUSINESS
Lawn Display Award
The Committee reviewed the lawn display award and discussed who would be making the sign,
the size, the color, etc. Mr. Seifert noted he had a friend who may be willing to
construct and paint a sign and said he would contact him. It was decided the Committee
members would take turns presenting the lawn display award to the winners.
Beautification Award Letter
The Committee reviewed the draft letter that will be mailed to the winners of the
Beautification Award. There were a few changes to reflect how long the winner would
have the lawn display sign, who would be delivering and picking up the sign, and a
few other minor changes. The Committee agreed on a final draft letter.
Publicity/Funds for Projects
Mrs. Sikes stated the first thing that needed to be done was to generate some publicity
for the Committee so that businesses and the public are aware of what the Committee
is trying to accomplish. Mr. Seifert noted the only way to complete some of the proposed
projects is with enough funds. The subject of sending letters to the Edgewater bus-
inesses, explaining the Committee goals and noting that donations would be accepted
through the City to help with beautification projects was discussed. Mrs. Sikes asked
Jennifer Halperin from the News Journal if she would write a publicity story for the
Committee and this could maybe eliminate the need to send a letter to every business.
Miss Halperin agreed she could do a story on the Committee and help to make the Committee's
goals and objectives known to the public. The Committee agreed this would be a good
start to get the public familiar with the beautification campaign.
The Committee reviewed names and addresses they had chosen from Zone 1 as a possible
winner for the first Beautification Award. With the sign not being completed yet, it
was hoped the first award could be presented in October. The members agreed to bring
names and addresses from Zone 2 to the next meeting to review for November's award.
Mr. Seifert suggested getting the public involved in a slogan for Edgewater to reflect
the efforts of the Beautification Committee and encourage citizens to help keep the
city beautiful. Mrs. Sikes felt getting the public involved in picking a slogan was
a good idea and suggested a contest could be held city-wide. The Committee discussed
this at great length and felt it could be accomplished without any cost to the City.
The members and their businesses, Diversified Carpet and Geiger Nursery, agreed to
donate prizes for the first, second, and third place winners. Entries would be mailed
to City Hall and local radio stations and local newspapers would make announcements
for publicity and information concerning the contest. Mrs. Sikes moved that the Committee
should proceed with the slogan contest city-wide, if City approval is given. Mrs. Fish
seconded the motion and it CARRIED 4-0.
