BEAUTIFICATION , TREE COMMITTEE

MINUTES
ROLL CALL/CALL TO ORDER:
Chairman Felicia Ver Way called the regular meeting of the
Beautification & Tree Committee to order at 7:13 p.m. in the City
Hall Conference Room.
Members present were: Felicia Ver Way, Linda sullivan, and Doris
stump. Also present was Lisa Kruckmeyer, Recording Secretary.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Ms. Stump made a motion to approve the minutes from the April 13,
1993 meeting, seconded by Ms. Sullivan. The motion CARRIED 3-0.
OLD BUSINESS:
Goals for citv Beautification
There was some discussion on a new name for the Beautification
Award.
Ms. Sullivan expressed some concern about the medians being done.
The Secretary informed the Committee there would be a bid opening
on May 26, 1993 at 3:00 p.m. for the plants for the medians.
There was some discussion on when the jack and bore would be
started.
Chairman Ver Way stated she would like to be there when the
planting of the medians is done.
Ms. Sullivan stated they should accomplish their goals from the
past before they start making more goals.
Chairman Ver Way read the existing list of goals they have right
now.
Chairman Ver Way suggested a memo be sent to the new Public Works
Director in reference to budgeting some funding for the
Beautification and Tree Committee to get flowering vine plants to
cover the retention pond fences and to make sure they will be
maintained by his department.
There was some discussion on getting funding for fountains in the
ponds and beautifying them.
There was discussion on whether or not the Beautification and
Tree Committee would be getting their own budget. Chairman Ver
Way explained Mr. Corder was going to present the list of
projects they would like to work on to Council.
Ms. Sullivan made a motion to send the memo to the new Public
Works Director, seconded by Ms. Stump. The motion CARRIED 3-0.
Ms. Sullivan asked if Mr. Corder was going to go for the Urban
and community Forestry Grant. Chairman Ver Way stated she didn't
know.
Ms. Sullivan suggested Mr. Corder or his staff get some
educational training and go for this grant.
Ms. Sullivan suggested sending Mr. Corder to the Urban Forestry
Institute which is a continuing education program.

Chairman Ver Way asked a memo be sent to Mr. Corder asking him if
he would be able to attend the Urban Forest Planning Management
Seminar from June 13 - June 18.
Ms. Sullivan made a motion to send a memo to Mr. Corder, seconded
by Ms. Stump. The motion CARRIED 3-0.
Chairman Ver Way stated he probably will not have time because of
everything that is going on right now.
Chairman Ver Way and Ms. Sullivan spoke about the program they
attended last year.
Ms. Sullivan asked to also include in the memo if he will be
applying for the Urban Community Forestry Matching Grant and ask
him if he would like some help from the Committee.
Ms. Sullivan suggested Mr. Corder plant wildflowers in the
medians along U.S. #1. She stated it would be a low maintenance
idea until they can do something else.
Chairman Ver Way spoke about a conversation she had with a
gentleman from the old Patrick's Workshop. She explained the
gentleman asked her to stop by and pick up a catalog of
wildflower seeds for them to order from. He explained they are
very reasonable.
Chairman Ver Way asked if the Committee was in favor of giving
the old Patrick's Workshop the July Beautification Award without
going around and choosing a building. They were all in favor.
Ms. Sullivan asked to have before and after pictures put in the
newspaper.
Chairman Ver Way stated Mark Miller asked her to contact him when
they have the ground breaking for the medians and while they are
planting because he wants to do a big article for the newspaper.
Chairman Ver Way stated there is a lady and a gentleman
interested in talking to the Committee in the Fall. She stated
she spoke to a Frances Reed who is interested in talking to the
Committee about starting a garden club in Edgewater.
Chairman Ver Way explained Titusville has an Adopt-A-Median
program and the medians in Titusville are adopted by businesses
but it has to be planted first. The business that adopts the
median pays a yearly fee and the maintenance is done by the city.
There was further discussion about the local garden clubs.
Chairman Ver Way explained there are a lot of people in Edgewater
interested in being in a garden club.
Chairman Ver Way stated a lot of the area cities do not have
Beautification Committees and Titusville keeps getting turned
down to be a Tree City U.S.A.
Chairman Ver Way gave an update on First union Bank contributing
towards beautifying the median next to the bank.
Chairman Ver Way thanked the secretary for the preparations for
the Arbor Day Celebration.
Chairman Ver Way read a letter from Mayor Hayman.
Chairman Ver Way asked the secretary to send a letter to Brad
Johnson, Dan & Teresa Lewis and the students at Discovery Days,
and NoraJane Gillespie, for their participation in the Arbor Day
celebration.

Chairman Ver Way asked a letter be sent to Anthony Sinicki and
the members of the Florida Shores Propery Owners Association for
donating the beautiful savannah holly tree and that the Committee
hopes they become a regular part of the Arbor Day ceremonies.
She also asked a letter be sent to the City Manager and the
Council for the holly tree donated by the City.
Chairman Ver Way commented on how nice the Arbor Day ceremony
was. She stated she would invite Jimmie Buffett and the cloggers
next year. She stated the women of the American Legion may post
the colors next year.
There was discussion on the videos taken from last year's and
this year's Arbor Day celebration.
Chairman Ver Way suggested combining Zone 1 & 2 together for the
Beautification Award because they are running out of places to
pick.
The Committee decided they would put Bloom up Edgewater, Flower
up Edgewater, and Green up Edgewater on the agenda in the Fall.
Ms. Sullivan expressed her feelings on projects they would like
to see not getting done. She stated it is very discouraging.
Chairman Ver Way stated she doesn't think they pushed hard
enough.
June Beautification Award Choice
The selections were tabulated and the winning residence was 3229
Queen Palm Drive.
Again, it was mentioned the old Patrick's workshop would be the
July Beautification Award winner.
The Committee again spoke about planting wildflowers in the
medians.
Ms. Sullivan made a motion to recess for June, July, and August
and reconvene in September, seconded by Ms. Stump. The motion
CARRIED 3-0.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to discuss, Ms. Sullivan made a
motion to adjourn, seconded by Ms. Stump. The meeting adjourned
at 8:10 p.m.
