BEAUTIFICATION & TREE COMMITTEE
SEPTEMBER 13, 1994

MINUTES
ROLL CALL/CALL TO ORDER:
Chairman Ver Way called the regular meeting of the Beautification
& Tree Committee to order at 7:00 p.m. in the City Hall
Conference Room.
Members present were: Chairman Felicia Ver Way, Kathleen
Spellman, Helen Janda, and Sandra Ruggles. Linda Sullivan was
absent. Also present was Lisa Kruckmeyer, Recording Secretary.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Reqular Meetinq of Mav 10. 1994
Ms. Janda made a motion to approve the May 10, 1994 minutes,
second by Ms. Spellman. The motion CARRIED 3-0.
NEW BUSINESS:
Welcome New Member - Sandra Ruqqles
Chairman Ver Way welcomed Ms. Ruggles to the Beautification &
Tree C6mmittee.
Chairman Ver Way updated Ms. Ruggles on the Tree City U.S.A. and
Arbor Day programs, beautification of the medians, beautification
of the businesses along U.S. #1.
Chairman Ver Way asked the Committee if they would approve of the
City Historian JoAnne Sikes making a presentation at the next
Arbor Day Celebration. Everyone was in favor.
Chairman Ver Way asked the Committee to come up with some ideas
for the next Arbor Day and asked the secretary to place it on the
next agenda.
Chairman Ver Way asked the Committee to make a list of goals for
future beautification projects for the next meeting.
Chairman Ver Way explained to Ms. Ruggles the process the
Committee follows for giving the beautification award.
There was a discussion regarding where the City limits has been
expanded to.

Chairman Ver Way asked the secretary to place creating new zones
for the beautification award on the next agenda due to the
expansion of the City.
Chairman Ver Way asked the Committee to call in their picks for
Zone 1 to the secretary and to bring their picks for Zone 2 to
the next meeting.
The secretary stated she would mail a map to Ms. Ruggles before
the next meeting.
Chairman Ver Way asked the Committee to think about some ideas to
make the well at Kennedy Park stand out from the rest of the
park.
Chairman Ver Way asked that a memo be sent to Ms. Sikes inviting
her to the next meeting.

Future Goals of the Beautification & Tree Committee
Chairman Ver Way asked if the Committee had any ideas on future
goals for the Committee.
Ms. Spellman spoke about a gentleman she heard on the radio
talking about a business he started where he finds champion trees
and he collects the seeds and grows them and people give them as
gifts.

Ms. Spellman stated she has a Chapman Oak and she could collect
the seeds if they ever needed to raise money.
Chairman Ver Way asked Ms. Spellman to look into this and let the
Committee know what she finds out at the next meeting.
Ms. Spellman stated she read in one of the Tree City books about
pinpointing the City's oldest and largest trees.
Chairman Ver Way spoke about having a contest to find out who has
the oldest tree in Edgewater for the next Arbor Day Celebration.
Chairman Ver Way stated she had a couple of calls over the summer
from people with suggestions for the beautification award. The
addresses are 2628 Queen Palm Drive, 925 Flagler Avenue and the
house at the corner of Indian River Blvd. and Travelers Palm
Drive. Chairman Ver Way did not have the address.
Ms. Ruggles asked about the City not being able to plant trees in
the medians. Chairman Ver Way explained the trunk can not be
anymor~ than 4" in diameter so we are limited to the type of
trees.
There was a brief discussion regarding putting trees in the
medians.
Chairman Ver Way would like to see getting trees in the medians
as one of the goals for the Committee.
There was a discussion regarding getting grant money from the
Urban Forestry Bureau to put trees in the medians.
Chairman Ver Way explained to Ms. Ruggles the reason there were
no trees in the medians the first time around was because the
plans were drawn up by an architect and there were no provisions
for trees in it and the plans had to be approved by the Committee
exactly as they were. She stated once the City was approved for
the grant, they had to leave it as is for one year.
Chairmqn Ver Way went on to explain getting trees in the medians
is a big goal for the Committee.
Chairmqn Ver Way commented on how nice Dr. Crewe's new office
looks. i She stated she would like to have that for her business
pick in December.
Chairman Ver Way spoke to Florida Power and Light about them
donating trees to their utility customers but she hasn't heard
anything.
Chairman Ver Way spoke about coordinating a clean up time where
one of the TV stations come and see a block to block clean up.
She asked the secretary to get the dates for the city for the
spring clean up.
Chairman Ver Way stated she would like to see fountains in the
ponds in Edgewater to aerate the water for the fish.

Chairman Ver Way informed Ms. Ruggles 11 trees were donated for
Arbor Day.

The committee then discussed taking smaller amounts for trees or
refreshments.
Chairman Ver Way asked the Committee to think about some
suggestions for the well for Ms. Sikes.
ADJOURNMENT
There being on further business to discuss, Ms. Ruggles made a
motion to adjourn, second by Ms. Janda. The meeting adjourned at
7:40 p.m.
