MINUTES
ROLL CALL/CALL TO ORDER:
Chairman Ver Way called the regular meeting of the Beautification
& Tree Committee to oroder at 7:05 p.m. in the City Hall
Conference Room.
Members present were: Chairman Felicia Ver Way, Sandra Ruggles,
Linda Sullivan and Helen Janda. Kathleen Spellman was excused.
Also present were Lisa Kruckmeyer, Recording Secretary and
Charlene Thomas, News Journal.
Chairman Ver Way introduced Ms. Ruggles to Ms. Sullivan.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
Reqular Meeting of September 13, 1994
Ms. Janda made a motion to approve the September 13, 1994
minutes, second by Ms. Ruggles. The motion CARRIED 4-0.
OLD BUSINESS:
Future Goals of the Beautification & Tree Committee
The following is a list of the goals discussed by the Committee:
trees in medians (top priority), fountains in the ponds, benches
by the lakes in Edgewater (getting people to donate benches)
Chairman Ver Way asked the secretary to send a memo to Mr. Corder
to find out the status of the grant that was applied for for the
medians at the north end of the City. She would like to know if
we have been approved and if so for how much.
Chairman Ver Way asked how many retention ponds there are going
to be in Florida Shores. She commented on the fences being taken
away and the Committee thinking about ways to beautify the
retention ponds.
Ms. Sullivan commented on putting benches and walkways around the
lakes in Edgewater and people could buy the benches and donate
them.
Ms. Sullivan stated the Committee has to get the neighborhoods
involved so they take pride in what they do and help keep it
growing and looking nice.
Chairman Ver Way suggested holding the Arbor Day Celebration at
the Lake and Alice Park next year.
Ms. Sullivan reminded the Committee of the "Welcome to Edgewater"
sign with a fountain at the corner of Indian River Blvd. and u.S.
#1 to tie in with the beautification of the medians.
Chairman Ver Way stated she spoke to Nancy Williams from First
Union about helping out with beautifying the median from u.S. #1
to the river. She stated they need to get the banks, businesses
and organizations involved so they would help support and put
money back into the community. She stated Ms. Williams was going
to check into how much she could get to help beautify the median
strip.

NEW BUSINESS:
Presentation bv JoAnne Sikes - City Historian
Ms. sikes stated she has spoken to Jack Corder and there is no
way that anything could be done due to the lack of room and
vandalism. She spoke about putting non-glare glass and
historical pictures on the well.
Ms. Sikes stated they may eventually put a walkway around the
well to make it stand out. Ms. Sullivan asked why this wasn't
incorporated with Riverwalk. Ms. Sikes informed her because the
well had to be replaced.
Ms. Sikes stated she has some money in her historical funds and
she may put the walkway around it and put the historical pictures
on the well.
Chairman Ver Way thanked Ms. Sikes for considering the Committee
to help out with this project. She was very grateful that
someone asked the Committee to get involved.
Ms. Sikes commented on beautifying the historical marker in front
of the library mounted on the coquina rock. The Committee was
very interested in considering this as one of their goals.
New Ideas - Arbor Day
Chairman Ver Way spoke about different ideas for Arbor Day. She
asked the Committee what they thought about Ms. Sikes reading a
story she wrote about a tree that was 250 years old.
Ms. Sullivan spoke about having a contest to find the oldest or
biggest tree in Edgewater. Ms. Sikes stated one of the oldest
trees in Edgewater is on Jean Haughwout's property.
Ms. Sikes spoke about an old photograph that she has John Milton
Hawks standing underneath of the tree located on Ms. Haughwout's
yard.
Chairman Ver Way made a brief run down of the new events they
could have for Arbor Day.
Ms. Sikes stated there are several very old oak trees along
Riverside Drive. She stated the description written by Dr. Hawks
is beautiful and that would tie in beautifully with Arbor Day.
Ms. Sikes suggested to the Committee if they are going to hold
the Arbor Day Celebration at the Lake & Alice Park they should
draw a map.
The secretary suggested having the naming of the park as a
contest for the Arbor Day Celebration. The Committee thought
that was a good idea.
Ms. Sikes spoke about a grave marker that is located in Edgewater
and how interested she is in finding out if it is really a grave
or not.
The Committee thanked Ms. Sikes for coming. Ms. Sikes left at
7:30 p.m.
October Beautification Award Choice
Chairman Ver Way apologized for not having her pick.
The selections were tabulated and the winning residence was 148
W. Ocean Avenue.

Chairman Ver Way changed her business to G. D. McGuinn's for
December instead of Dr. Crewe's office.
The picks for the November award were: Kathleen - 1007 S.
Ridgewood Ave, Helen - 1629 Travelers Palm Drive, Sandy - 806 S.
Riverside Drive, Felicia - 920 S. Riverside Drive, Linda - 1528
S. Riverside Drive.
Ms. Sullivan stated the gentleman who lives at 1007 S. Ridgewood
Ave sells plants. Chairman Ver Way suggested the Committee talk
to him about the plants for the marker at the Library and for
beautifying the retention ponds.
Ms. Janda stated her business pick is Leon's Edgewater Motor.
Charlene Thomas, Daily Journal, asked if Ms. Ver Way wanted her
to list the houses that were chosen for the November award.
Chairman Ver Way informed her no.
Chairman Ver Way asked Ms. Thomas if she is covering the award
presentations. Ms. Thomas stated she didn't know but all they
had to do is call the Journal and let them know when and where
they need coverage.
New zones - Beautification Award
The Committee discussed not being able to change the zones due to
the fact that the map does not go out to 1-95. The secretary
informed the Committee a map was not yet available and she would
check for the next meeting.
Chairman Ver Way asked if Magnolia Village was annexed into the
City.
Ms. Sullivan asked if we have annexed down to Hacienda Del Rio.
The secretary stated she didn't think so.
MISCELLANEOUS
Ms. Sullivan suggested the Committee think about an award for
manufactured homes.
The Committee spoke about the Maglev groundbreaking. Ms. Thomas
informed the Committee it was by invitation only.
Chairman Ver Way stated we need a name for a new award for houses
that have done renovations and extensive amounts of work.
Ms. Janda spoke about some renovations she has made at her house.
Ms. Sullivan spoke about the house on Riverside Drive that has
been totally renovated. She feels he deserves an award.
The Committee discussed presenting this award twice a year to a
home or business. Ms. Ruggles suggested calling it the
Beautification Restoration Award.
The Committee discussed the renovations that have been done at
Edgewater Florist, Park Avenue Cabinetry, Maid Rite and B & L
Plumbing.
The Committee discussed when people are recognized for things
they do more people get involved. Ms. Ruggles spoke about the
big turnout for people decorating their homes for Christmas.
The Committee discussed members being allowed to be eligible for
the beautification award. The Committee decided it would not be
proper for the members to be eligible.

Chairman Ver Way stated she noticed the Garden Club nominates
their members.
Ms. Sullivan suggested placing this on the next agenda to be
added to the by-laws.
Chairman Ver Way stated she asked if the Garden Club would like
to start a Garden Club in Edgewater. She was told only if she
could provide a building like they have now.
Chairman Ver Way spoke about how nice the medians look in Ormond
Beach.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to discuss, Ms. Sullivan made a
motion to adjourn, second by Ms. Janda. The meeting adjourned at
8:00 p.m.
