CITY OF EDGEWA TER
PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD
JANUARY 11,19967:00 PM
CITY HALL
MINUTES
ROLL CALL/CALL TO ORDER
The January, 1996 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Board was called to
order by the Chairman, Tom Tipton. Members present were: Tom Tipton, Larry
Ruggles, Erwin Brown and Hal Jones. Board member Shirley Pittman was
absent. Also present was Jack Corder, Director of Parks and Recreation.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Mr. Brown moved to approve the minutes of the August 31, 1995 Special
Meeting and Mr. Jones seconded. Motion CARRIED 4-0.
OLD BUSINESS
26 AcreslT our of Home
Mr. Corder stated with the conclusion of the Christmas House, although he
doesn't have all of the final figures in, that we still made a profit of somewhere
between $15,000 and 20,000. Mr. Tipton asked if he felt that was a fair return
considering it was the first attempt and Mr. Corder replied yes, although he
would liked it to have been a lot more.
Mr. Corder stated the winners were Scott and Vicky Taylor and their two children
from Whitman, Massachusetts. He said they arrived here in Edgewater on New
Year's Day and on January 2nd the closing was held and they were moving in.
Mr. Corder said he was extremely pleased that someone who really needed the
house was the winner and the Board agreed.
It was asked if we would be doing another home give-away and Mr. Corder
replied it was on hold right now. He said his Department was trying to play catch
up from things that got put off, due to his personnel being so involved with the
house project and also there are a few things that need to be addressed with the
State if we should do another one. Mr. Corder said if there were another one,
his Department would have to have extra personnel to handle it; even with all
the volunteer hours put in, his people were stretched pretty thin. Mr. Corder
explained some of the things we learned from the first one, especially from a
marketing stand point, and perhaps it would be easier to get bidders for the
marketing next time.
MISCELLANEOUS
Mr. Corder stated a golf course was still a possibility and not a dead issue. Mr.
Ruggles asked if it was still the same two properties near the Interstate and he
replied yes. He also stated he hoped to know by the end of the summer which
way it will go. The Board members agreed that a golf course in Edgewater is
much needed and would be a great money maker.
Mr. Corder stated the basketball program was underway and we added 4 or 5
new teams above last year. He added next year's scheduling will be difficult with
our growth to accommodate all the teams at the gymnasium, as the Church uses
the gym a couple of nights a week also.

.."",
Mr. Tipton asked about elections for Chairman and Vice Chairman for the new
year and suggested nominations be opened. Mr. Ruggles nominated Tom
Tipton for Chairman and Mr. Jones seconded the nomination. There were no
other nominations and Mr. Tipton was named Chairman again for this year by a
4-0 vote. Mr. Jones then nominated Mr. Ruggles as Vice-Chairman and Mr.
Brown seconded. There were no other nominations and Mr. Ruggles was
named Vice-Chairman for this year by a 4-0 vote.
