Also present-Ecotourism Subcommittee Member Steve Harrell, and Finance Director John McKinney
3. NEW BUSINESS
a. Proposed kayak trail locations.
Chair Berner provided an overview on the current status of establishing kayaking trails in the City of
Edgewater; discussed the trail development and approval process; reviewed each of Edgewater's
proposed kayak trails, stating that all trails will originate from Menard-May Park; and asked for
input from the Edgewater fishing community.
During the workshop the group discussed.-
Being able to put Edgewater trails into a kayaker's GPS
Edgewater being listed on Florida Paddling Trails Association website as a Bluewater Trail City
Not making any changes to current waterway regulations, or any additional restrictions
Not impeding boat traffic
Trails being marked so kayakers can find their way back to Menard-May Park
Promoting growth in Edgewater
Ecotourist enjoying Edgewater amenities
Boat and kayak trails running together, safety concerns, and suggested mitigation techniques
Identifying and marking potential trail "caution"areas
Floating markers,pole markers, safety zone markings, and State requirements
Possibly piggybacking Edgewater kayak trails on existing trails
Having to submit proposed trails to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) to be officially
designated as a kayak trail
Making sure all kayaking literature emphasizes that boats and kayaks share the waterways
Proposed kayak trails staying north of the Blue Hole area, and not putting kayakers at risk
How long the application requesting designation as a kayak trail takes
Chair Berner thanked everyone for attending Edgewater's review of proposed local area kayak trails,
and for providing their input.
