As to the My 7" Agenda: Newslettel' - Following this memo is a copy of a Fayette County Economic Development Authority Newsletter- done on both sides of a single g %z x 14 sheet. It plovides some insight into the kind of information we might consider io our version. The Edgewater adaptation should be geared to several audiences. It should educate/inform local residents as to our purpose, goals, acccj nplishments and future direction. It should also provide informatiop of interest about local businesses, their operations and success stories, as Yvell as feature business opportunities for new site locations, staff training, alit. I'm still willing to take on the writing assignment providing that the Board and City staff feed me the information needed to develop the issue. I'll call and talk to:Susan about space available and mechanics of production. Hotel/moto prospect —We have the ear and the interest of a major hotel/mote development group. Ken Hooper at al are developing a community prospectus to share with them. Please have the working draft Fedex to Y* for review and suggested amendment. I'll return it for finalizing On a quick turnaround. The Group would like to see our prospectuafproposal before September. Page 2/ Eon Dev — July 7 04 The current view is toward a "courtyard" type facility with some conferencing capability. It could be either a franchised or independent operation. &000mic development materials — The budget approval for staffing would be a major positive step in our program's development. However, it is almost like having a great new car, but no gas to operate it if there isn't adequate operating dollars. We need partners in order to produce a new updated and more complete CD, a brochure and presentation folder, as well as a portable exhibit frame and program panels. I've followed up on Rick Michael's email to Ken Hooper of May 17t' offering some support for materials design and printing cost on joint collateral materials development. I've left messages but no response to date. We can also explore joint efforts with the Chamber, Port Orange and New Smyrna Bgach. Our initial exploration with the two cities was quite positive and Steve Dennis has always been a team player. Let me know how you want to proceed. ZTAMPAID PEACIDRHB CRY, GA Plan #314 The Edgewater ShoreLines ED BIZ Welcome to our Cost column featuring the latest activities and announcements from Edgewater's Economic Development Board The Edgewater Economic Development Board, assisted by the Planning and Development Department, consists of nine volun- tary members, appointed by the City Council. The EDB's mis- sion and purpose is to identify and recommend to the City Coun- cil implementation strategies to help create newjobs, expand the tax base, diversify the economy, and enhance the quality of life in Edgewater. The Board's goals are to retain and expand local businesses, assist in creating new business start-up opportuni- ties, market the economic benefits of the community, and recruit new businesses. Joe D. Martin, Chaimtan Douglas McGinnis, Vice Chair Nancy Freeman Nom Aly Christopher L. Balmer Kathy Leonard Oscar Zeller Fred Fathi Thomas Hamall Spotlight The Economic Development Board salutes the many contribu- tions to our community by Kenneth May, founder of Coronado Paint Co., who passed away on February 15. Ken and his wife Phyllis founded Coronado Paint Co. in 1957, growing the company from a small local paint manufacturer to an industry leader of national and international importance. Ken was an entrepenem and innovator. After the Mays sold Coronado Paint Co. to European paint giant Tollens Co. in 1980, his accomplishments continued as founder of Coronado Marble Co. and Coronado Laboratories, both located in New Smyrna Beach. Coronado Paint Co. remains today one of Edgewater's leading companies. Coronado employs 165 persons in manufacturing, managerial and technical positions. The May's legacy of Edgewater extends beyond Coronado Paint Co. They donated part of Menard—May Park to the City. This popular riverfrom recreation area brings enjoyment to all of am citizens. rrrrrar EDE member Chris Balmer recently represented Edgewater at the Design and Manufacturing Show at the Javas Convention Center in New York City. Chris distributed pamphlets and CD's promoting Edgewater to potential businesses considering reloca- tion to Florida Bia networking led to conversations with eight different companies, and Edgewater's location on the Intra- coastal Waterway was a great draw. Page 9 Upcoming Events At our last meeting, EDB member Nom Aly announced plans for the second Business -to -Business Expo. Tentatively set for Fall 2004, details will be available soon for this popular event, which gives Edgewater businesses a chance to spotlight their goods and services, meeting, greet and network. Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Steve Dennis announced at a recent EDE meeting the Chamber will be hosting a Business After Hours August 12th for bmi- nesses in Southeast Volusia who work out of households or have no regular storefronts. This is for Chamber members only and would be an excellent opportunity for Edgewater businesses who might not otherwise have an opportunity to promote them- selves locally. Call Southeast Volusia Chamber at 386-428- 2449 for more details. The Edgewater Economic Development Board meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 8 a.m, usually at the Edgewater Community Center. The public is welcome and input from Edgewater's business community is always encouraged.
