Librarian Ruth McCormack, Volusia County Library Services
Director Mike Knievel, Southeast Volusia Regional Library
Regional Librarian Suzan Howes and Recording Secretary Lisa
Bloomer.
MEETING PURPOSE
The purpose of the meeting was to recognize the Library
volunteers. Chairwoman Haughwout informed the volunteers
the luncheon was to honor them and show appreciation for
all they do for the Library over the year and how much
money they have saved the County. She thanked them on
behalf of the board. She then introduced Lisa Bloomer,
Mike Knievel, Suzan Howes and Ruth McCormack.
Mr. Knievel stated the volunteers make up a third of the
library division's work force. Countywide, volunteers if
they were to have to pay them to replace staff, would cost
$1 million. He updated the volunteers regarding some
changes that are going on. He mentioned rewiring that is
going on at the Edgewater Public Library. He spoke of the
need for improved access in case of an emergency so the
Library could be used as a temporary shelter.

will have to start thinking about what they want to do such
as expansion or a new site. They will be expanding Deltona
and Port Orange first with Edgewater to follow in 2010.
Mr. Knievel then commented on currently wearing two hats
due to his boss leaving. He is also trying to run
community services. He extended his warm wishes to
everyone and thanked them for their contributions to the
library due to having to leave for a 12:30 p.m.
appointment.
Ms. McCormack asked the volunteers to check in their
napkins to see if they had a sticker. The people that had
stickers on their napkins won the centerpiece from the
table.
Ms. McCormack felt it was very good news that they are
thinking of expanding the Library in 2010. She commented
on definitions in the Websters Dictionary and how they
pertain to volunteers.
Ms. McCormack then thanked the volunteers for what they
have given to the Library. She then recognized special
people such as Anne McDevitt, Barbara McKowski, Kathy
Booth, JoAnne Sikes, and Jean Craymeyer.
Ms. McDevitt commented on the functions of the Friends of
the Edgewater Library. She spoke of the Friends raising
money to enhance programs and facilities at the Edgewater
Library. Their purpose is to benefit the Library. She
mentioned the volunteers being honorary members of the
Friends. She further spoke of just having their membership
drive. They realized about $800 income. They signed up 35
new members and had 28 renewals.
Ms. McDevitt mentioned some of the officers of the Friends
doing more than others and recognized Jean Craymeyer for
being a special lady and for her dedication to the Friends
and the Edgewater Library.
Ms. McCormack informed the volunteers she had their
certificates for later but did present Ms. Craymeyer with
