MINUTES
CALL TO ORDER:
Chairwoman Haughwout called the Special Meeting to order at 12:03
p.m. at the Edgewater Library.
MEETING PURPOSE:
Vicki Bede welcomed everyone to the 2005 Volunteer Recognition
Luncheon. She then introduced Head Librarian Ruth McCormack.
Ms. McCormack also welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming.
She spoke about comments customers are making regarding our
Library. She commented on the dedicated people that make this
possible. She then proceeded to introduce Suzan Howes, Eva
Williams, Chairwoman Jean Haughwout, Mayor Donald Schmidt and
Recording Secretary Lisa Bloomer.
Suzan Howes expressed her appreciation for the volunteers. She
brought greetings from Mike Knievel, who had to attend another
meeting. She commented on having an active grant to FEMA to
provide wind protection for windows and doors and emergency
generators for the six regional libraries and Edgewater and the
Library Support center. They are looking at making Edgewater and
New Smyrna libraries shelters in the future. The grant will go
to the County Council on April 22nd and then to the State on May
5th. She further commented on the Flexible Wind Abatement
System. This has not been approved but is in the process.
Ms. Howes again expressed her appreciation. She commented on how
much we learn from the volunteers.
Ms. Williams presented greetings from the Volusia County Library
Advisory Board. She commented on the money the County saves
because of its volunteers being $1 million. She urged the
volunteers to stay with the system because they couldn't run the
libraries without them. She commented on the volunteers being
willing to try anything and how much they are appreciated by
everyone.
Chairwoman Haughwout opened the April 5th meeting and explained
the purpose of the meeting was the recognize the Library
volunteers. She then introduced the Library Board members. She

encouraged the volunteers, if they are interested in serving on
the Board, to submit an application. She further commented on
the purpose of the Library Board and what they do. She then
expressed appreciation for the volunteers.
Mayor Schmidt thanked Ms. McCormack, her staff and the volunteer
staff. He commented on the volunteer hours and saving the County
$1 million. He feels this enhances and improves what the system
can really do. He thanked all the volunteers on behalf of the
City. He informed the volunteers they are always looking for
members to serve on any of the City boards. He feels Edgewater
has the best library. He feels we have an ideal spot, an ideal
staff and an ideal bunch of volunteers.
Ms. Bede informed the volunteers they would be receiving their
individual certificates later but recognized them, by having them
stand up, by what they do which includes courier service,
telephone calling, pick list, bills, check in/check out,
shelvers, shelf reading, magazine/book processors, book/audio
visual repairs, book sales, various other task, and children.
City Historian JoAnne Sikes gave the blessing.
Lunch was served at 12:20 p.m.
There was a sing along from 12:S3 to 1:03 p.m. which included the
following songs: Edelweiss, Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue, Que
Sera, Sera, If I Had a Hammer, Red Sails in the Sunset and This
Land is Your Land, which was led by Ms. Bede and Ms. Gear.
Ms. McCormack thanked Ms. Bede and informed the volunteers she
would be leaving to go back to New England. She wished her the
best.
Ms. Shaw informed the volunteers if they had sticker under their
place setting, they could take the table decoration with them.
Ms. McCormack thanked the Board for providing the wonderful
lunch. Ms. Shaw is responsible for the place settings and the
beautiful decorations.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned
at 1:0S p.m.
