SPECIAL MEETING
APRIL 20, 2004

MINUTES
CALL TO ORDER:
Chairwoman Haughwout called the Special Meeting to order at 12:05 p.m. at the Edgewater
Library.
MEETING PURPOSE:
Chairwoman Haughwout explained the purpose of the meeting was for the dedicated group of
volunteers at the Library.
Chairwoman Haughwout introduced Ruth McCormack, Suzan Howes, Pat Northey, Mike
Knievel, Mayor Schmidt, Reggie Williams and Recording Secretary Lisa Bloomer.
Ms. McCormack commented on the hours the volunteers have put in over the past year as being
7,719 hours. She also informed everyone this is National Volunteer Appreciation Week and
thanked the volunteers for their time.
Pat Northey, Volusia County Council, informed everyone she is pleased to have the support of the
Library System. She assured everyone they are not cutting hours. She then commented on the
money the volunteers save the taxpayers. She expressed her pleasure in having the volunteers as
part of their team.
Reggie Williams informed the volunteers they are very important to the Library system. The
volunteers in V olusia County provide the equivalent of 46 full time staff He informed them they
couldn't provide the level of service they provide without the volunteers. They are going to be
looking at the system as a whole to customize the hours to meet the needs of the community.
They will be looking to the volunteers for input.
Mike Knievel invited the volunteers to open up dialogue to Ms. McCormack. They are looking to
get input regarding the hours at the Edgewater Library. He informed the volunteers now is the
time to express their preference. The County Council will be going through the budget process
over the summer and if need be they will take action to recommend a budget change.
Mayor Schmidt stated when this issue went before the City Council there was no waiver in any
voice. They issued a letter to the County Council to show support. He feels the Edgewater
Library is the best library in the County. He spoke of the Regional Library being built and the
need for small libraries. The volunteer hours show there is a need. He feels they need more
people; kids, adults and family. He expressed his support for everything the Library does.

. Helen Carl presented the blessing, after which time everyone enjoyed a delicious meal.

At 1 :00 p.m., the Edgewater Landing Choir sang.
After the choir was done, Ms. McCormack thanked everyone for coming.
Linda Rutty, the Volunteer coordinator, expressed her thanks to the Board and the volunteers.
Their hard work lightens the load for staff and they really appreciate it.
Ms. Rutty presented certificates to the volunteers.
Suzan Howes also thanked the volunteers for their hard work.
