04-11-2000 - Special ~ u <.) c..\,~o....::1<'~ ~ \ c..~...~~, .- r ~ LIBRARY BOARD EDGEWATER PUBLIC LIBRARY SPECIAL MEETING April 11, 2000 12:30 P.M. Mike Knievel, V olusia County Library Director, read a letter signed by the County Manager and presented Linda Ruddy with a Crystal A ward Certificate. The certificate was for her suggestion to utilize the Library's courier service for payroll delivery so Library staff would be freed up. He also presented her with a check. CALL TO ORDER: Chairwoman Jean Haughwout called to order a special meeting of the Library Board at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in the Edgewater Public Library. The purpose of the meeting was to recognize the Library volunteers. ROLL CALL: ~'"-\.<"- ~~~~ ~~,~'=-, \..:-~.::<""~~"\ Members present were Chairwomhn Jean Haughwout, Marie Goodrich, Mary Rice:Linda Ladd, Jo Anne Sikes and Kathy Clausnitzer. Also present were Librarian Gayle Harmon; Regional Librarian Russell Long; County Library Advisory Board (CLAB) Representative for District 2 Eva Williams; V olusia County Library Director Mike Knievel; Dwayne Slate, organist for First Baptist Church; and recording secretary Liz McBride. Sue Shaw was excused. Chairwoman Haughwout said one order of business was to have someone from the Board recommend Sue Shaw be reappointed for another term. Ms. Sikes so moved, second by Ms. Rice. Motion CARRIED 6-0. Chairwoman Haughwout said for the record, the Board would like to recognize Liz McBride for putting together information about giving donations to the Library in the Edgewater City Newsletter. Chairwoman Haughwout adjourned the meeting at 12:35 p.m. to partake of the meal. Mike Knievel, Vol usia County Library Director, said 96% of Volusia County citizens had rated Library services as good to excellent. He said it was an all-time high and the highest citizen satisfaction rating he had ever seen in any Library system in the United States. Mr. Knievel said he brought this up to give credit where credit was do. He said since the volunteers, the Friends of the Library and the local Library Boards and associations made up a third of the work force, they deserved a third of the credit for the citizen satisfaction in Library services. He congratulated them for doing such a fine job. Russell Long, Regional Librarian, said it was always a great pleasure to thank everyone once a year at this time but always a great pleasure to thank them for a sense of service they brought to the community of Edgewater. tI ~ u .- . '-. Edgewater Library Board April 11, 2000 - Minutes Page -2- Eva Williams, CLAB Representative, said she was happy to be in attendance and was thankful for the invitation. She expressed her appreciation to all the volunteers. She stated it was National Library Week and a new rule had been instigated: "there's no such word as retirement." She felt they would need more volunteers for the next year since there was very little in the budget for new staff. Mayor Don Schmidt thanked the group for inviting him to the luncheon. He acknowledged that volunteers were very important to the community. Mayor Schmidt said because of his involvement '---... the schools, they also rely heavily on volunteers. He said it was good to see such a large group of volunteers present, and said he would like to get the younger people more involved. The Mayor thanked the group for all their efforts. Librarian Gayle Harmon told the volunteers she hoped they all knew how appreciated they were. She said she would like to point out the Edgewater Library Board members, who were the ones hosting the luncheon. Ms. Harmon recognized Linda Ruddy who recruits and trains, and who knows who works doing what, when and where. She thanked the volunteers on behalf of the customers and staff of the Library. Chairwoman Haughwout said Linda Ruddy, Library Assistant, would like to present certificates to the volunteers for their service.
