06-25-1985 - Special ~ o o \ CITY OF EDGEWATER CITY COUNCIL JOINT MEETING WITH INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT BOARD JUNE 25, 1985 MINUTES CALL TO ORDER Mayor Baugh called the special meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Shuffleboard Building. The purpose of the meeting was to hold a joint meeting with the Industrial Board and discuss and possibly take action on matters relating to the Industrial Appreciation week set for September 16 through 20. Councilman Prater made the motion and Councilman Asting seconded the motion. The motion CARRIED 5-0. Mrs. Doris Massey called the Industrial Development Board joint meeting with the City Council to order. Members present: Mrs. Massey, Messrs. Gnau, Schneider, Siconolfi, and Mrs. Middleton. Excused: Mr. Vazquez. Absent: Mr. Faidley. Also present: Mrs. Taylor, Secretary and Mrs. Rufer, Secretary. Mayor Baugh turned the meeting over to Mrs. Massey for further discussion of Industrial Appreciation week. Mrs. Massey said the Florida Industry Appreciation Week is :September 16 through 20 and possibly have a day for Edgewater Appreciation Week on September 21, which is on Saturday. Some of the things Edgewater could do woulc be have tours - if we could arrangements for buses, etc. that would not be to costly. She said she had already talked to Mayor Musson of New Smyrna Beach that if they were not using their buses that possibly we could make some arrangements within a price range to minimum expense and take a tour of the industrial firms in our area. Some of the companies mayor not entertain people coming through their plants on a tour, and in those cases they could set up displays showing their products. She said we could set up booths in the Community Center and let each one have an area for display. Some of them would have big items. Noland Car might have some of their carts for display. Tropical Blossom might have honey or some of their other products for display. Each person could have a knowledge of what is manufactured in Edgewater. After the tours and everything had finished we could possibly have snacks or a light luncheon of some type, similar to when the Seminar was held. This would be_for the Board members, companies represented, etc., people taking part in the days activities. Mrs. Massey said that New Smyrna was having theirs during the week and by having ours on Saturday City Hall would be closed and also it would enable more people to participate that would normally be working during the week. We could hold all our~activities to one day, the 21st of September. We could set a time of perhaps 10 to 4 or 5. Mayor Baugh suggested possibly sending a printed invitation to each of the industries that have occupational licenses as manufacturers to establish who would be there. And then send those attending a certificate of appreciation, showing them that we care that they are there. Mrs. Massey felt that approximately $600 would cover the expense involved. Our industry is our tax base for our city and is a way to show our appreciation to them. She said that through the Chamber of Commerce that they had been making tours of the industrial plants and they have been most appreciative and receptive to what we are doing in regard to the Industrial Appreciation Week. # Q o Mayor Baugh suggested that the banking instituations be invited as well. The banking instituations are important to our community because of the local loans for industry through them. Mrs. Massey felt that industry and banking work hand in hand. And that this was a great idea and only said leading industry so we would not get out of bounds. She said someday that the name of the board could be the Economic and Development Board which takes in businesses as well as industry. Councilman Asting said it_would be a help to have a map showing the industrial areas presently here and also pointing out the industrial land that is available. Mrs. Massey said through the Chamber this year, she is Chairman of the Economic Development Committee of New Smyrna and Edgewater, and they have been touring some of_the~industrial plants. Coronado Paints, Noland Car Sales, Oscar Zellers, Atlantic Fiberglass are some of the plants that have been toured by our group. Mrs. Massey also said that Noland Car Sales and Coronado Paints have been recommended to the Industry Appreciation Week nominations. A brief discussion followed concerning use of buses, touring, etc. Mayor Baugh suggested that the meeting go back into the regular meeting. Councilman Asting made a motion that the Council go back into special meeting and Councilman Inman seconded the motion. The motion CARRIED 5-0. aouncilman Asting made a motion to authorize expenses up to $600 for refreshments and to include transportation for the Industrial Appreciation Day. Councilman Rotundo seconded the motion. There was a question if this expense runs over what happens. Mayor Baugh said it could be brought up at the regular meeting to increase the amount. It could be brought up at the regular meeting as a motion to amend the $600 to whatever if it was more. Councilman Asting included this in his motion to take it from the Planning and Development Budget. Councilman Rotundo included this in his second. The motion CARRIED 5-0. Councilman Asting made a motion to make available, city forces, as needed, to the Industrial Board for this Appreciation Day. Parks and Recreation Department for signs, set-ups, any help that may be needed. Councilman Inman seconded the motion. Motion CARRIED 5-0. Mayor Baugh requested that on the July 1 agenda include a formal request a letter be sent to the New Smyrna Transist Authority requesting their buses for that day. By putting it on the July 1 agenda everyone will know about our request. Mayor Baugh asked Mrs. Massey if she could get a cost figure by Monday. Mayor Baugh asked for a motion to adjourn. Councilman Prater so moved. Councilman Asting seconded the motion.
