HISTORICAL PRESERVATION BOARD APRIL 11, 2002, 6:30 PM EDGEWATER COMMUNITY CENTER MINUTES ROLL CALL/CALL TO ORDER The Chairman, Tom Tipton called the meeting to order. Members present were Diane Trout, Mike Visconti, Joe Fishback and Tom Tipton. Jo Hagan and Jerry Balz were absent. Also present was Adelaide Carter, liaison from the Economic Development Board, and Jack Corder, Director of Parks and Recreation. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mrs. Trout moved to approve the minutes of the last historical meeting on December 13, 2001. Mr. Visconti seconded the motion and it CARRIED 4-0. OLD BUSINESS There were no Old Business items for discussion. NEW BUSINESS Goal Planning Session Mr. Corder stated he would like the Board to come up with some goals, whether they be long term or short term, to give the Board a direction to go in. Mr. Visconti brought up the subject of the City museum that will be housed in the new Parks and Recreation offices. He asked whether or not we would be looking for old or new showcases for the displays in the museum. Mr. Corder replied he would be looking for new ones. He said there would be enough room for 3 cases along the wall in front of the windows and enough space in the center for one. He also says he will be putting an organ from the 1800's and an old antique dresser with a glass front on one of the walls. Mr. Fishback asked what sort of material we already have for the display cases and he said the City Historian, JoAnn Sikes already has a commitment from the McGinnises who own Tropical Blossom Honey and they will donate a display for the museum depicting the honey business and also from the Wilkinson family who have artifacts from an old palmberry factory. Mrs. Sikes also has a large variety of pictures from the Hawks family, the first buildings in Hawks Park, and families who first settled here. He stated he also has 3 or 4 boxes of artifacts which were donated and those boxes have not been assessed as yet. His hopes, he stated are that once the museum is open, it will generate a lot of interest, and that will encourage others who may have valuable artifacts or pictures to get more involved with the displays. He said he has contacted one local artist, who has Recreation/Cultural Services Bd. Historical Preservation Mtg. April 11, 2002 1 '-" "",., committed to a display of artwork for the exhibition room and he hopes to change the displays monthly to keep generating interest from the public. He stated there will be a Grand Opening as soon as everything is ready. Mr. Fishback asked how soon the museum may be opened and Mr. Corder stated he was hoping for the middle of May, but probably June was more realistic. Mr. Fishback asked if the local schools would be utilizing the museum, and Mr. Corder replied he hoped to make plans for that in the upcoming school year. Mr. Tipton stated the opening of the museum should be listed as our first short term goal and the Board agreed. Mr. Tipton stated the upcoming joint archaeological search with New Smyrna and Port Orange is upcoming and should be included as a long term goal. This project is going to be important if they find the tie that determines that the Turnbull Colony extended as far south as Edgewater. This colony went as far back as 1768 or so. Mr. Fishback asked which is the oldest building in the City and Mr. Corder replied that none of the historical buildings have yet been classified. He felt that should be a long term goal, as well, to have a site survey of possible historic sites and have some research done on them to determine what historical value is there. Some of the possible sites, he said, would be the Hawks Park Clubhouse, the old church, an old house they believe was the first post office, and also the house that Dr. Hawks lived in, which is just north of the City Hall complex. And these are just a few of the possibilities. The Board determined its first 3 goals would be as follows: 1. Opening ofthe museum - short term goal. 2. Conclude archaeological joint search with New Smyrna and Port Orange - long term goal. 3. Old buildings research and site survey ofthe City -long term goal. Mr. Corder stated we are really starting on the ground floor in the historic aspects of Edgewater, and there is much to be done. He once again stated he hoped the opening of the museum would begin to generate a more public interest in the City's history. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, Mrs. Trout moved to adjourn, seconded by Mr. Fishback. Minutes submitted by Barb Kowall Recreation/Cultural Services Bd. Historical Preservation Mtg.
