Both Councils discussed the proposed extension of the New Smyrna Beach
Transit Service into the City of Edgewater.
Mr. John Coffee, Transit Supervisor, explained the proposed route through
Edgewater and the time schedule of the three daily trips. Each round trip
would be 15 miles at a cost of $1.00 per mile. The cost to the City of
Edgewater would be $45.00 per day less fares collected.
Commissioner Bent expressed concern that this additional service would
mean less service for the residents of New Smyrna Beach.
Mr. Coffee said that the Transit system would use the bus that is presently
being used primarily for school children and that the hours of service
to Edgewater would not conflict with the service in New Smyrna Beach.
Mrs. Beckham said that the total cost of operation for the transit system
is approximately .90 per mile. This includes all overhead, maintenance,
salaries, etc.
There was some discussion about the present condition of the busses and
whether this additional service would increase depreciation.
It will be necessary to obtain approval from DOT for this expansion. Mayor
Musson and Mayor Christy will talk with the DOT.
The majority of the New Smyrna Beach Commissioners favored expanding the
service on a trial basis. -Commissioner Bent said that she was opposed to
any expansion.
The Edgewater City Council favored extension of the service into Edgewater
on a 6 weeks trial basis.
New Smyrna Beach Commission will take action on this at their next regular
meeting.
Edgewater City Council will also take action on this at their next regular
meeting.
