The comments below are based on that reporting and assume its accuracy. As a preface I should say that I have had a yard sign in my yard supporting the garbageman and that I consider myself a socialist. Thus, I am pleased that privatization and job losses appear to be off the table. I believe in community ownership, in this case city ownership and management of the waste management system, however when you manage a system is your responsibility to demonstrate that governments can run these systems efficiently for the community. The reporting suggested that the default position was no change which seemed to be politically easier for council members. The notion that the service should remain hand loaded verses mechanized seems to suggest that as a government service you can remain inefficient and wasteful. Those of us who want to protect the status and jobs related to this service do not expect you to discard your duty to make it an efficient and financially responsible operation. Similarly, the concept of one pick up per week should not be discarded out of political convenience. I can say our household puts out trash no more than once per week, often once every two weeks. Rather than seek to maintain inefficiencies and potentially over service, perhaps you could look at more progressive 21St century issues aimed to reduce landfill site trash. For example, compostable material probably makes up 50%of trash collected after proper recycling is done. It also accounts for much of the trash that would create odors if less pickups were made.A city-wide composting program could reduce landfill and provide a finished product for city use or sell. This is just one example of a progressive strategy to waste management. Please do not support a status quo that will keep us in the dark ages and give government management a bad name, look for efficiencies while keeping control and protecting jobs. Consider forward thinking programs to reduce landfill and lower the overall negative environmental impact of waste management, including the miles truck use for two pickups a week. This is an opportunity to be a forward-thinking city on the cutting edge of issues rather than one stuck in the past because it is easier. It may also save tax payers some money, although that should not be the driving force.
