We are still trying to schedule the Town Hall Meeting on the Utilities with Council, gave a few additional dates to see If we could all get together. b. City Attorney Quick litigation update In the Fire Association Litigation -deposition have been scheduled for next week so that's the next event in that case. As to the Marina litigation-previously set out discovery in the form of written questions and a document request. Their attorney objected to some of the requests but I feel that some of the objections are unfounded so under the rules I was required to send a letter to both Plaintiffs letting them know why 1 thought their objections were unfounded and giving them time to correct their answers, that time has now lapsed without giving the discovery requested. At this point I will prepare a Motion to Compel Discovery in that case and set it for hearings, that will be the next event in that case. Just recently the Plaintiffs sent a document request to the City and the Developer set a document request to the Plaintiffs. c. I wish to refresh your memories of the previous meetings where garbage collections were discussed and all the people who attended to support our fabulous city asset, garbage people. No company or containers can possibly attempt to provide such home town service and quality. The citizens are growing very weary with all these meetings,we feel in an attempt to wear us down. We have voiced our opinions and support to save our current garbage collections and remind you, you did the same publicly. Even Gary Powers held up a support sign. I understand the need for more money but not at the expense of great service and city service people for an unknown big business or big containers. I might remind you,of your promise to protect our workers and their jobs. Leave us alone and our garbage men alone as well as our fees and only raise the fees for all the new housing going in. Have a sliding scale until such time as the normal aging out of people and vehicles occurs. In your vote Monday please consider the human factor which has no price but represents all Edgewater citizens and employees and protect our garbage men'sjobs!!! In a community like ours many homes have no place to place the larger style trash container which means many of them will be setting in driveways or carports-not a pretty sight- many of our citizens have single car driveways and would have to drag the larger container thru the grass. Sense many of our elderly won't be able to do that easily they will need to put their car in the street, move the container, put the car back and repeat the process once the trash is picked up. Also what about larger items such as debris from remodeling or replaced hot water heaters and the like. The services you say we will loose are much more than people realize. At Arlington National Cemetery, in spite of rain and cold, more than 38,000 volunteers placed 254,000 wreaths. Nearly 600 truckloads of wreaths were transported across the country through a network of hundreds of volunteer drivers, donated trucking services and fuel, and countless hours of dedicated volunteers committed to the mission to Remember the fallen, Honor those that serve and their families and Teach the next generation the value of freedom. In Edgewater 150+volunteers participated or supported the placing of 468 wreaths on Veterans Graves at the Edgewater New Smyrna Cemetery. Representing the City was Councilwomen Power and O'Keefe. The State of Florida was represented by State Senator Tom Wright who spoke. He also surprised the audience when he removed his coat revealing his Patriot Guard Riders leather vest. The Patriot Guard Riders have been proudly escorting wreaths to Arlington and other locations for 25 years. They also escort the bodies of hundreds of thousands Veterans to their final resting place. The day started with a red, white and blue trailer loaded with the wreaths being pulled by an EFD vehicle in the Edgewater Parade and then escorted by EPD, EFD and Patriot Guard Riders to the Cemetery. The Ceremonial Wreaths representing the US Army, US Navy, USMC, USAF, USCG, US Merchant Marines and one representing the POW/MIA were placed at the Veterans Monument at the Cemetery during ceremonies. The wreaths were then taken around the cemetery by the EFD and placed on graves by the many volunteers. Food and beverages were then provided to all who attended. The wreaths will be retired later this month as they start to turn brown. I would like to thank all of the volunteers who assisted in this large undertaking. In particular Stonemor and Edgewater New Smyrna Cemetery and representative Christine John. My sincere appreciation to the Mayor, Council and City Manager who has supported the Wreaths Across America in Edgewater for 13 years now. EPD Chief Mahohey, Lt. Soltz, and officers, EFD Chief Larisky and Fire fighters in particular Engineer Justin Thomas who escorted and stayed with the wreaths until the last one was placed. Parks and Recreation Director Sam Bergeron and in particular Deputy Director Jason O'Keefe who made sure that everything that was needed from traffic cones to tables and chairs, pop up tents were in place at the designated times and places. All this while still making sure the parade was well covered. "The theme for Wreaths Across America this year has been 'everyone plays a part; and I am reminded daily how true this statement really is," said Karen Worcester, executive director of Wreaths Across America. "As we grow to include new communities and honor and remember more veterans each year, it is clear, there is no role too small. We are grateful and humbled by the outpouring of support across the country." Each live, balsam veteran's wreath is a gift of respect and appreciation, donated by a private citizen or organization and placed on the graves by volunteers as a small gesture of gratitude for the freedoms Americans enjoy. For centuries, fresh evergreens have been used as a symbol of honor and have served as a living tribute renewed annually. Wreaths Across America believes the tradition represents a living memorial that honors veterans, active duty military and their families. Volunteers are asked to say the name of the veteran out loud when placing a wreath to ensure their memory lives on. This years ceremony will be on Saturday December 19th, 2020. Wreaths are already being purchased online and any purchased by January 15`h is being matched one for one. National Wreaths Across America Day is a free event and open to all people.
