A. NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF SITE. (Use back of page and
continuations)
This site is represented by a relative uniform shell midden bordering the
west shore of Indian River North. Site dimensions are 250m n/s by 30m e /w.
Some areas of dense midden are present with scattered shell present on surface.
Heavy ground cover in understory under a climax mixed oak /pine forest. Midden
depth approximately 40cm. Differential midden deposit by species ratio (i.e.
oyster /clam) suggest probable differnt extractive practices by site occupants.
Good quantities of fanual and possible floral materials exist atthis site.
Of 328 sherds recovered during testing, 320 (97 %) are St. Johns Plain.
B. DISCUSSION OF SIGNIFICANCE (Use back of page and
continuations)
This site is considered elibile for NRHP under 36CFR800 (d). Site has
capacity to yield excellent subsistence pattern data through faunal and possibly
floral studies. If St. Johns I only occupation, site considered rare. Site is
likely to yield significant information relative to St. Johns period occupation
and biotic extraction practices.
